For those of you who installed the dynon pitot/AOA tube - where did you install the static port? Did you go with one or two?

Cessnas usually install the ports on the side of the fuselage, just behind the cowling. That makes for a short run to the instrument panel. In other aircraft I have also seen them installed on the tailcone.

Recommendations?

Tim

I tried the pilot side of the fuselage - had bad readings, tried the passenger side, had better but still bad. Tried to tee them together - had better still yet but still a bit off. Opened up to the cockpit and have just about perfect - go figure!!!

Tim,
I used the Grumman approach and used two ports midway back on the
fuselage. The result seems to be very well behaved in a slip.

I used the Cessna 172M position initially. I got lots of airspeed errors. These were corrected by moving the static ports to a location on the fuselage forward of the horizontal tail. I used ports on both sides to account for slips. The results are good.

Tim, I installed two static ports on either side of the fuselage just below the aft portion of the canopy about in line with the 601XL step. From there it was easy to route both lines to the Dynon ADAHRS and forward up the center console. I have not flown yet so don't know what results this will yield.

I started with the static ports half way between the flap and stabilizer on both sides of the fuse. I compared airspeed with the GPS and I am slow by 12 mph. I disconnected the static line from the back of the Dynon and I am fast by 12 mph. I was thinking of trying the fuse sides in front of the instrument panel.
Someone must have a good location.
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I don't know which model 601 you have and it probably matters a lot.

On the XL the static port on the drawings is about half way out on the
bottom of the wing. It is on a tube that runs parallel to the pitot
tube. This works well. I haven't done a formal calibration but the GPS
speed and Dynon airspeed always seem quite close.

The fuselage on the XL doesn't have any points where its side runs
parallel to the line of flight. This means there is no "Neutral"
position for static ports. It also means there is no yaw stability
until the rear end gets more than 11 degrees from straight ahead (the
rear fuselage forms a 22 degree angle at the aft end).

Good luck,

Paul

You won't have the same airspeed as a GPS. They measure differently. The pitot system is really an air pressure system.

I placed my two teed static ports behind and below the canopy hinge. They are connected to both a dynon with AOA pitot and an old style anaolg AI. They both read the same, even in a slip they provide a reliable indication.
