Well Here is The skinny of me and N213 thursday afternoon I was out flying when all of a sudden I got a real violent Vibration enough to set the ELT off it shook the whole airplane this way and it was violent enough to shed both carbs then I was getting some glider time in, and only one small bog covered with 3 feet of snow I was not... in a panic mode at all I ended up landing 200 yards short and in the woods the mk3 didnt make it but I got a bruised ankle and a small scratch on the back of my hand, I spent the day with the FAA and talking to the NTSB and insurance company and the rest of the day taking what was left of the airplane apart and out of the woods before the airplane pirates could find it
The FAA guy said the propellor was the cause of this situation as far as he can see, one of the three Warp Drive Blades lost 2/3 of its blade. I never been fond of Warp drive Props and now I can never change my mind about what I thought of them, im Thinking this could have taken my life or worse someone elses life, The NTSB wants to take possession of this Prop

Brother Batchelder:
Major congrats on handling what was obviously a tough situation… Glad you are OK.
Further testimony to the inherent strength of the Kolb that she didn’t come to pieces on you in the air after
slinging most of a blade… some other light aircraft designs might have done so.

Ellery, glad to year you're OK, sorry about the plane.
Funny, I always had the impression that Warp Drives were the toughest out there?

I thought they were the toughest out there but I just didn't like the idea of how they
pitch the blades and the design of the Prop Hub on this particular model

Ellery B/Kolbers:
What model hub and blades were you flying?
Have you talked to Darryl at Warp Drive?
First time I have heard of a blade seperating on a Warp Drive.
Again, glad you are ok.

I'm just glad to hear that your ok. Insurance can replace the bird so you can fly again. It does speak volumes on the safety of the design. One of the reasons I picked a Kolb.

Great that you made it out. Well I guess I am not going to get a Warp drive either. I like that Tennessee prop anyway. Too bad they don't make a 3, 4 blader's.

Ellery, I'm glad to see that you made it out ok.
How many hours did you have on the Warp Drive prop? Did it have any nicks that you could see? How many hours did it have? Was it the tapered prop?

Ellery,
I'd like to add my congratulations to you for a job well done. Emergencies handled well are what training, practice and experience are all about. PLEASE keep us posted on the prop assessment by NTSB. Has Warp Drive expressed interest in getting it back for their own evaluation?
Care to share your plans/thoughts on re-building or building new?

Thom Riddle
I am sure Warp Drive will be interested in those prop blades.
However, I don't think they are Warp Drive Blades. To the best of my
knowledge Warp Drive has never built anything but solid carbon fiber blades.
The blade that failed on Ellery's MKIII looks like a honey comb core blade.
Another peculiarity of this failure is the area of the blade that failed,
the trailing edge.
If I am wrong, promptly correct me. I plan to call Daryl in the morning and
will confirm if they have ever manufactured and sold honey comb prop blades.
All Warp Drive Prop Blades have the serial number and maybe the weight of
the blade inscribed in pencil on the butt end of each blade. Also, one
blade of a two or three blade prop will have the data sticker on it with SN.
I have flown and been sponsored by Warp Drive since September 1993. During
that time have flown my MKIII with Warp Drive props mounted on 582, 912UL
and 912ULS, for more than 3,000.0 hours. The worst situation I have
encountered with the Warp Drive Prop was when an 18" section of 1.5" exhaust
pipe with a 180 degree and a 90 degree bends, broke and went through the
prop at wide open throttle. Was climbing out when I heard and felt a huge
explosion. Had a slight vibration. Made a precautionary landing at the
next airport to check out the damage. There was a ding in the leading edge
of one blade. Flew the remaining 11 miles back to my airstrip with no
further problems except the slight vibration. Was lucky the prop did not
kick the pipe into an aileron, wing, or tailboom. However, it did get the
bottom frame of my radiator which was mounted between prop and tail of
fuselage cage.
