p { margin: 0; }Guys,
I have posted before about the dangers of CO ( carbon monoxide ). I recently found the bottom of my firewall outside the engine mount weldments were a flat open space ( about 5/8" wide x 1/16" deep ) on each side. I had put a 60 watt light bulb under the cowl to keep the moisture out of the engine compartment. I could see light thru the cracks and strong evidence that this was at least a part of my CO problem. My carb was running very rich and smoked up the firewall and I could see smoke trails entering these holes. I had missed sealing them prior to my first flight.
Please be sure to seal ALL cracks and penetrations at and around the firewall.
Has anyone found a way to stop the Jabiru muffler / exhaust pipe connections ( 6 ) from leaking?? These connections were designed to flex so the pipes would not crack but there is too much clearance between the pipes and muffler connection. Back pressure from the muffler causes the exhaust to flow back out around the pipes. There must be a better way. When my carb was running rich the pipes had black streaks emanating from the muffler back up the pipes. The red High Temp silicone will not stay in the cracks or on the pipes & muffler sealant does not work either. Stopping the CO at the source would help reduce the likelihood of contamination in the cockpit. Any Ideas!!

Bobby,
Those are interesting observations of soot on your firewall. I guess I have not seen that in my airplane, but here are a few observations I had on CO and an effort to reduce it in my Jabiru installation. I have access to a calibrated 3M model 740 multi-gas detector and placed it in the passenger seat beside me.
My stock Jabiru FWF kit exhaust pipe extends past the lower cowl lip by only a couple of inches. Flying in this configuration showed cockpit CO levels up to 170 ppm in full power climb and 50 ppm in cruise. As a comparison, OSHA allows up to 35 ppm exposure in a time weighted average for an employee on an 8 hour shift and says no employees should be exposed to more than 200 ppm ever. Needless to say, this was a little alarming to me.
I went to AutoZone and bought an exhaust extension pipe for around $9 bucks. The two screws that hold this on seem pretty cheap, but this has held rock-solid for over a year and 50+ flight hours so far. I flew with this extension installed and got CO levels of 32 ppm in full power climb and 0-5 ppm in cruise. When I opened up the cabin heat, the level went up to 9 ppm and then came back down when I closed it. 9 ppm of CO can be measured on a busy street corner in just about any city. With these levels of measured CO, I have not done anything further.
I am not sure what version of Jabiru exhaust you have, but if it does not extend much past the lower part of the cowl and fuselage, I whole heartedly recommend an extension.
Good Luck,
