I'm joining Scott for a little trip to the Baja, down by Cabo
real soon. Not even a resort this time...RaNae got a great
looking house to stay at. I'm a bit nervous about the
security/safety aspect of Mexico though....I would prefer it
if we all come home with our heads still on our bodies,
and that my daughters don't get sold off into the
human sex trafficking market. So I'm doing everything I
can to make sure the RV-10 is at 100% for the trip, and
will be guaranteed to bring us home.
Should be a good time...and I'll definitely do a write-up.
I bought a new camera lens for the trip too that will
help us pack lighter and give good shots.

Tim,
Where are you planning to fly that requires 3 new tires and a prop
lock? And when are you planning this trip? I have no idea where you are
going but I already can’t wait for the photos& write up.
Living vicariously through Tim's family vacations,

Think AK47 and RPG when you pack. Leave the camera stuff home.

You seriously should find out whether your aircraft insurance will cover you and your plane while down there.
I used to drive the the East Cape area, towing a 20 foot boat in another life time. I would not even dream of doing that now.
As for the stories I have heard, an aireal recon of Baja is great, but I would not land there. WHether the plane has a lock on the prop or not, they steal it anyway, because they will hold a gun to the head of who ever is watching over the plane or if not find you and do the same.
This is no joking matter, ask your insurance carrier.
Just my two cents and I wouldn't do it.

I did, and it does. I have Golbal and they cover it fine.

I know, it's pretty spooky these days, that's for sure.

with the bigger ones.

I refuse to go to Mexico when given the offer, but I can tell you that I have friends who go there montly, as they built a home in La Paz, they drive through Mexico and tell me they have never been harassed or had any problem- they go loaded and are ready to “defend” themselves. Once a police threatened to take them in and take their car, they said that was fine and nothing ever came of the threat otherwise never an issue.
Tourist places are usually not an issue if it’s an organized place, I think you’ll be fine and have a great time, people fly there all the time without issue.
Just take pictures and give us the documentary so I don’t need to do the trip myself in the future!

Consider joining/using Baja Bush Pilots. They have lots of contacts down there and many members have made recent and regular flights south. Lots of info for members and help if needed. I've made several flights to Rocky Point, Loreto, and La Paz. No problems.

Almost every insurance company will cover you in Mexico. I purchased a separate policy only because there has been some areas that did not get the word that you don't need insurance from a Mexican company anymore. My policy for 10 days was $65.
With RV's I would have no problem recommending to anyone to go land there, explore and have a blast. Almost everyone I ran into said no one will touch a low wing, they only want the high wings (182, 206 and 210's). Your right about the prop locks, they are almost worthless. They may keep the small guys away but if they want your plane they will get it.
My first trip down there last year was incredible and the people are so nice and inviting. I would rather everyone think this is a dangerous place so they don't all crowd up the hotel rooms. (psssss....it's not)
Again, I can't tell you how many great people there are down there. It just supports the fact that people are good, the news is bad. Now that does not mean there are not bad people and you should not be careful. I am careful when I fly to California. Anyway, I am not trying to convince anyone that Mexico is safe, just be careful where you get your information.
One thing that amazes me everywhere I travel in Mexico is the number of Americans that live down there either full time or just in the winter. I have not met one person that says they have ever had a problem down there or think it is unsafe.
This year like Tim said we are going all the way down to Cabo. Last year I only made it to Loreto but I hope to show them some of the cool spots on the way down and hit some of the cool airports on beaches. Here is a link from my trip last year.
