Gang, I need a bit of help with RPM monitoring. My EIS has intermittent loss of signal, probably due to a intermittent ground. Every thing else works on the EIS, and while not a serious problem, It is irritating enough that I would like to either fix it or have a back up. I thought first of a Tiny Tach. Aircraft Spruce only lists 3 different models, a 2 stroke that might work with my HKS, a diesel model, and a really "fancy" one that cost twice as much as the two stroke one. I don't have a problem with any of them, I just don't want to have to send one back because its not working with my engine. I also need a longer lead wire than 6 feet. Any help and advice would be appreciated.
Larry

Larry:
You might consider going directly to Tiny-Tach. They would be able to sell you the model you need for your engine, and they can add (at a charge) the additional length that you would need.

You might also look into the ENM tachs. They're similar to the Tiny Tach, but are programmable so you set it to work with your engine rather than having to buy a particular model that matches. I have also found them to be more reliable than the Tiiny Tachs.

Check out the following site:

Give them a call, and they can make the lead as long as you would like it
and they will help you pick out the model you need.

Thanks to all who replied with url's and advice. I am not quite sure why I didn't come up with the same conclusions that all of you did. Too spoiled by all the knowledge that is available just for the asking I guess.
Thanks again

Larry,
Not to assume, but what kind of engine do you have?
Do you have single or dual ignitions, if dual could you be loosing
the one your monitoring.
Just a thought.
Those Tiny Tach's do work good as long as you get the proper model.

I am using the HKS 700 E and it does have dual ignition. There are two wires coming out of the ?lighting coil? that will indicate the RPM's Either one will work with occasional lapses, neither one will work all the time. The two pink connectors are the wires that indicate RPM, the blue wire is the one that goes to the EIS. I will again check to make sure that I have a good connector on the EIS wire.
The weather finally moderated and dried up enough for me to go flying for the first time since Nov 6. I spent it doing landings. I needed it too. I found with that long of idle time that I had a mouse trying to make a nest in the area behind the seat. Not sure when he abandoned ship, I can only hope that it was at altitude. I plugged the boom tube, so that it will be tougher for any of them to get in again. Next year when I put it up I will rig a rope to the rafters to raise the tail up off the ground high enough that the little rascals cannot get into the tube.
Oh, we are back to windy and cold. Glad that I took advantage of the fleeting good weather.
