Violent Storm Hits Sun 'n Fun Fly-In
March 31, 2011
by Scott Simmons, Glenn Pew
Damage at Lakeland, Florida's Sun 'n Fun air show may be in the millions
after a storm blew through late Thursday morning, damaging aircraft and
structures on the ground. Everyone has been accounted for on-site, and there
are no reports of serious injuries. Initial reports on cable news channels
indicated that 70 people were trapped under a collapsed roof, but those
reports appear to have been unfounded. Lakeland Police Department's Terri
Smith, whom AVweb spoke with on-site, informs us that no building have
collapsed. (Some outlets are reporting that a tent collapse had temporarily
trapped those inside.)
Storms were still moving through the area after the initial onslaught.

I'm in the campground now. I think the power is still out. A small tornado must have passed through, because there is a row where tents & planes are mangled. I think all 4 aircams were destroyed & 3 of 5 planes in the Zenith booth. 2 Citations & a Caravan flipped. There are 3 air campers in a pile as well as several flipped planes out on the flight line. Not many rv's damaged that I am aware of. Lots of tents & canopies destroyed. The whole ECI & Phillips 66 tent is gone. The whole place is wet. Some of the hangars had standing water in them.
They kicked everybody off the grounds to prevent chances of looting. The campground is very wet, but mostly in tact. Some campers have damage. I saw one pop-up with the top blown off. Lots if tents are collapsed or torn. Hopefully the rain will pass soon & we will be able to start cleaning the place up.
We lost a Zenith 801, but the Maverick is fine. Van's planes made it through with very little damage.

Jesse, thank you for the first-hand report. Sorry to hear about your plane. I'm hoping to hear all RV-10's at least are fine.

Seems like ours made it through OK, need to do a through inspection to know for sure. Had "Claw" tie downs, they gave a bit but did not give up. If you have ever been down here you know how sandy the soil is. I can't even count the number of the thread in dog leash type tie downs that were on aircraft that didn't do so well. After the first wave of bad weather they said an even bigger storm was coming, so we bought a second set to help hold it in place. Thankfully the storm did not materialize.
The wind blew so hard it stripped all of the paint off of our airplane, well at least that is the excuse we can use for a while for not being painted yet.
My heart goes out to all of those who lost their labor of love to the storm, first sploshkosh now this...

www.grassrootsnews.tv has a good video of the storm (including a clip of adam from TruTrak and Alex D). not sure if the earlier email made it to the list.
I dont know of any RV-10's damaged except minor wingtip damage to the van's plane.

I was there today, I could not get out to the flight line to see the tens. How many are there?

Was their a tornado and severe weather forecast predicted? Or was it hiding behind a heavy rain forecast. Just curious if you knew it was coming if you could've tried to fly out of its path.

I never heard any warnings. It just got real dark and then the rain. I took shelter from the rain inside one of the four hangars. They closed the doors as the wind picked up. With the noise from the rain on the metal roof, we did not notice the extra heavy wind. Garmin had to pickup some of there units as the roof was leaking.
On Wed. and Thursday I counted two RV-10 in HB and two more in HBC. We made it as far as Hilton Head, SC with our RV-10 and rented a car to make it to Sun n Fun. Just over seven hrs from Hilton Head to Nova Scotia and got home at noon today.
