With impending weather in the SE US, I packed my bag, loaded the MKIII, and
took off for Alabama, Sunday morning.

Was a good flight, a little bumpy, but quick for a Kolb. Was able to fly
420 sm in less than 5 hours and two landings enroute. Cruising at 80 to 85
mph, we maintained a ground speed over 100 mph for most of the flight. The
problem was, if I climbed high enough to get out of the turbulence, I lost
my tail wind

The MKIII performed great, as usual. It was good to get back into flying
cross country.

Got to visit with many Kolb customers, old friends, and made some new ones.

Although we had some serious weather, we faired well to have survived a
tornado. My MKIII did some serious straining at her tie downs, but they
held. Luckily she did not receive any damage from flying debris as did the
factory FSII which also had the upper lift strut tangs bent from the tie
down ropes. The FF suffered a broken lower vertical stabilizer, probably
caused by the right wing which was in the folded position for display
purposes. It created a large sail and huge side load on the tail wheel
before it broke.

As far as I know this is the first time I have had rain blown into the
exhaust system. The day after the storm I was rotating the prop to check
the oil in the 912ULS. During "burping" of the oil system, I noticed water
on the tailboom as it dripped out of the silencer. After the airshow we
pushed the MKIII out to the flight line to start the engine and blew the
water out of the system. I don't know if water actually got into the engine
or not, but the silencer on the Titan exhaust system was filled to the
bottom of the exhaust outlet, and probably could have been blown into a
cylinder with an open exhaust valve.

It was good to talk with you, John, Travis, and the guys.

I missed all the weather and it's a god thing...I would likely have been parked near the the tornado path.

Good to hear that everyone is home safe... Very Happy
