Hey Guys,  I'm in the process of working out the new Dynon Skyview setup in my 7 year old, somewhat heavy and totally stock RV-7.  I'm at 1150# empty and have an Aerosport IO-360 with horizontal fuel injection and the Hartzell c/s prop.  I recently recorded the following numbers in cruise flight:   Altitude 8500' ,  19F OAT, 8.0 gph, 2400 rpm, 22.3" mp,  161 kts TAS and 144 kts indicated.   The Skyview claims that I was producing 66% power according to it's internal database of Lycoming IO-360 engines.

Do these numbers sound right?

Do you have a 180 hp IO-360, or a 200 hp IO-360?

If you have the 180 hp engine, Van's performance claims at gross weight, adjusted to 66% power, would be about 166 kt. If you have the 200 hp engine, Van's perf, adjusted to 66%, would be about 172 kt.

You might want to do the GPS TAS calibration test.
My Dynon D-10A TAS reads about 7 knots low at 8.000' Density Altitude using something close to economy cruise power, and about 8 knots low at full throttle.

Speaking of D10A inaccuracies, has anyone seen theirs report wind component speeds that just aren’t really believable? Sometimes I’ll see my claim there’s a 50-something kt wind when there’s no way it could be more than 20 or 25 kts.

Yep.

Most accurate wind speed calculations are direct head/tail winds. I noticed that for cross winds the calculated speeds can be high. I assume this is the nature of a degree or two of heading error (or for that matter a couple of knots of TAS error) getting blown by the sin/cosine at 90 degrees factor – resulting in higher than actual wind speed.

In my 8A I note the TAS to be 3-4 knots high, but the heading to be very close. The indicated wind speed did get more reasonable after I repositioned the remote heading sensor to get rid of the heading error.
