Dear Kolbers,
I wanted to share with you a learning that I had and may help some of you!
I have an external whip antenna on my FS-2 and have a Handheld Icom A 22 connected to it. I had a long cable 2.50 meter (RG-5 running from the radio to the external antenna which should be in multiples of (Half wavelength - 1.25 meters or 2.50 meters) for 121 MHZ center frequency that we use.
Since the length was too long, I reduced it to 1.25 meters (4.1 feet) and had to install a new RF BNC Connector to connect to the Radio. The new connector was a screw in type that gets into the Coax cable and after installing, I picked up some local frequencies and assumed alls right! I had been receiving all frequencies so was flying around with this set up for a couple of months. Last Friday I picked up a signal from a Bonanza who was also entering the pattern and tried communicating with him, but it was one way, I could hear him, but not transmit. After I landed I did a continuity check and found that that the screw in connector did not connect well. I went ahead a purchased a factory molded BNC connector from Radio Shack and that solved the problem.
My learning was that it is always good and necessary to do a radio check before one takes off to ensure two way transmission. I have added one more R to my CIGARRS checklist-
CONTROLS-INSTRUMENTS-GAS-ATTITUDE- RPM- RADIO CHECK-SAFETY.
Thanks,
Mahesh Iyer
