Door wedges???

I have been looking at some of the things people have done for the bulging doors.  I had mine installed real nice then I installed new door locks.  I had to pull off the Cabin width MOD from inside the door.  I put the locks on and glued the MOD panel back in place.  The wrong thing to do.  Then installed my window.  I should of placed in back on the fuselage so it would take that shape.



I now have a bulging door.  Mal Maclure apparently made some wedges that help.  Anybody know how to do the wedges?

Kingsley Hurst does. He is pretty busy at the moment, but I'll try and flush him out of hiding. As I recall it was interlocking triangular wedges. The door "FRAME" one, midway along the bottom horizontal edge has its vertical face inwards, and a reciprocal one on the outside of the door has its vertical face outwards. He simply pulled the door in at the bottom of its travel, mated the two surfaces, and then eased the door down, then shut it. They were only small, about 8 mm high, as I recall, but I saw them about 10 years ago. Kingsley has seen them more recently.

Now, can someone tell me why the door tangs don't finish square with the hinge line??

I made some stainless pin and strikers for center of door. Easy to do and works great. Details on page 3:

I opted to leave gas strut in original position and install a pin and striker in upper aft area. Probably on page two and three. Works well along with CF stiffening. When you close door it pushes down on the upper aft portion of the door!

Tangs can't be parallel with hinge line because of curvature of fuse.

See page 1, 2 and 3 for mutilation of that area with great results and minimal gap.

I haven't had any problems with my doors but I made the attached auxiliary 

latchs for the doors because it seemed a good idea at the time.

They are made of Tufnol and are 25mm long.  If Neville Eyre is lurking . . 

they are 1" long.



Note that the door part latches over the sill part on the inside face.

Because this was left as an exercise for the builder !!  IOW, the factory 

stuffed up.



They can't be square with the hinge line Tony but the geometery can be 

corrected.  See attached.

the door flexes enough to let the wedges slide over each other and latch. When the shoot bolts are engaged the door can't flex so

it won't bulge out and suck your sleeve into the gap. I was flying one hot day and had the vents open and couldn't work out who was tugging at my sleeve at 4000 ft.!

I took some clay to see if I could make the wedges and figured out that I had put the wide MOD 67 panel on wrong.  It was off center.  So I took it off to re-center.  I had to do some fiberglass repairs as this was the second time I had installed and removed it.  Because of the wide MOD 67 the door is weak in the middle and you can see it bowed there.  I took a piece of aluminum angle on the outside and was thinking of heating it up and determined that I needed more strength in this area.  I laid three layers of one inch tape and shaped it into an “L” around a aluminum angle inside the door area above the lower lip.  I made it about 18 inches long.  I believe that will straighten the door in this area.  I will be added some more fiberglass to the cut out areas from the wide MOD 67.  I'll let you know the results in a few days.

 Sorry if I confused you Fred . . . . I hope the  attached will be easier to follow.

  

 Bear in mind my honourable friend, I don't know if  I really needed these devices but I did them anyway if for no other reason  than to satisfy my determination to take 20 yrs to build the aircraft  !!

Excellent sketch Kingsley. 20 years? I needed 4 years to build my Long EZ, then it took another 15 to refurbish it and fit another engine. (NO, not a twin!)
