A reminder of the continued problems with the glass tube, fine mesh fuel filter.
Whilst on a return leg from a flight to Kemble last week l experienced a higher than normal fuel flow reading on my trigear G-IPOD (912S). Between way points Booker and Elstree l had a 6th sense feeling that the engine sound was 'different', although RPM, MY etc were OK. I was at 1900 on 1018 with 25MP and 4950 RPM. Upon contact with Elstree Info the 912S ran rough (instantly gaining 100% of my attention). I called for an immediate clearance inbound for 08 (conveniently at 3 miles on the nose with an Easterly wind).
Normal checks - mags both, boost pump on, switch reserve feed.
An 'interesting' S approach with a heavy sideslip late final got us down a tad fast on 08. The fire truck was manned and ready and gave us a 'follow me' service to the apron.
Extensive run up on the ramp (up to 4500 RPM only gave no sign of any roughness (main or reserve).
Upon gaining telephone advice from Bob Boyt (superstar), l stripped out the carb balancing tubes (no leaks) and then attacked the fuel filter (cleaned about 25 hrs beforehand). The filter was full of black sh_t, visible green lumps. Cabair provided a few tools (thank you) and in an hour or so l had a clean filter installed.
Lessons:
1. Check the filter every 5-10 hours.
2. Use the RESERVE fuel feed, it probably prevented a stoppage (Ref AAIB G-FELL incident).
3. Training - PFL and EFATO drills work, practice them regularly. I forgot to put the prop into Fine for the landing - hence the extra 5+ kts of airspeed.
The really weird thing - a week beforehand, whilst on holiday, l dreamed (nightmare?) of exactly this scenario. A premonition brought on by the reading of several AAIB accident reports. Very timely.
Happy and safe landings.

Hi John,
It is compulsory in Germany to have a fuel pressure warning of some sort. I have one from a Katana which is just a switch and light.
You would have noticed any restriction in the fuel system on your takeoff run where you require the highest flow. It certainly gets your attention when it comes on!!

Hi John and Barry,
I agree with Barry. Having a fuel pressure warning light and/or gauge is very useful, as it provides an early warning in case of a fuel system partial obstruction. Another issue is the too small filtering area of the original in line filters. Using a bigger filter or gascolator is a must. Using a filtering funnel when using Mogas also helps but it does not eliminate the risk of contamination.

Thanks for the advice.
I already use a Mr Funnel when fuelling the aircraft. The simplest solution is to replace the filter(s) with an alternative. I already asked LAA for advice on this. Preference is for a filter which can be inspected pre-flight without dismantling.
My experience with a DA20 Katana was not good - a 912 that refused to shut down (mags off, keys out, fuel cock off, throttle closed).
Regards
John

Barry,
Can you tell me the switch type and how it is plumbed in to your system. I
am planning to fit the same to my Europa.

Mike,
I am also using the Katana fuel pressure switch. Attached pic shows the Bosch P/N. I have not found any other solution than buying it from Diamond and it cost me around 100 Euros, as far as I remember. Same looking Bosch pressure switches sell for less than 10 Euros but they are rated for oil pressure, that is ten times what we need.
The other picture shows the intallation on the firewall of my aircraft. The switch is on the left side of the picture. On the top is the UMA fuel pressure sensor. The right fuel line comes from the tee on the carb fuel line. The bottom fuel line goes back to the tank and includes the restrictor.
Regards
Remi

Hi Mike & Remi,
Mike, I am sorry but I have been traveling. You got your answer from Remi though.
Remi, Good to see that you are using the self rounding hose clamps like me. The "Jubilee clips" that the works supplied were pretty useless!!
Have a good weekend.
