Hi Folks:

Winds today are from the north at 10-15, gusting to 23. Decided to postpone
my takeoff until Monday morning. Will still have a headwind to Neosho, MO,
tomorrow, but somewhat lighter than today.

Tuesday, west out of Neosho, Great Bend, KS, is forecasting:

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a southeast wind
between 13 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

If that holds true, I should have well over 100 mph ground speed. I can
handle the wind when it is in my favor.

After Fort Collins, CO, weather will be iffy through the mountains from Rock
Springs, WY, Heber City, UT, Provo and on to Wendover, UT. Going to spend a
few days in Wendover, then west to Elko, NV, and NW to the Rock House.

Temps are much cooler out West. Hard to pack cold weather stuff when it is
hot in the SE.

Would like to see a better forecast this week, but don't think I am going to
get it. Wednesday night snow is forecast in the Rockies between Rock
Springs, WY, and Provo, UT. Not ready for that.

Thanks, Jim S.

Not real happy with the weather. Seems to get more screwed up each May.

Most FBO's have computers. I'll do my best to keep you guys up to date on

Still want to fly to Michigan for a visit with you and Rick N.

Thanks for the invite. IIRC I landed there for fuel in 2009 on my return
flight from the Rock House. Met a bunch of really nice folks there. You
may have been one of them, but my memory is not that good.

Weather is deteriorating and will be rotten throughout the week, especially
in the Rockies. I'm not much for temps in the 30s with rain and snow. Wind
gust to 40 mph around Goodland, KS, one of my stops, Tuesday.

I have postponed my flight until next week or whenever the weather gets a
little better.

John -

Sounds like you're making a good call.

You write that Goodland, KS will be one of your stops, and in a prior post you mention Rock Springs WY. I'm sure that your actual route changes based on a number of factors - yet I'd really enjoy seeing a "start to finish" list of the stops on the route you are planning to travel.

Wishing you a wonderful, wonderful flight. If Norm continues to improve (he had knee surgery two weeks ago) I'll see you at the Rock House.

Arty T/Gang:

Most of the places I land are because I have landed there before and like
them, or I have no other choice. When you need gas, you need gas. Speaking
of gas, I'd never fly anywhere out West without a full tank. Never leave
the ground unless I am topped off, if fuel is available. Fuel is not always
available.

I usually fly the same routes and land the same places because they work.
The northern route from Gantt IAP to the Rock House:

-Columbus, MS
-West Helena, AR
..either
-Mountain View or Heber Springs, AR
-Neosho, MO
-Great Bend, KS
-Goodland, KS
-Fort Morgan, CO
-Loveland/Fort Collins, CO
..either
-Laramie, WY or Walden, CO (depends on ceiling because Walden is about 8,500
MSL and have to climb above 10,000 to get over the mountains)
-Dixon, WY is I come through Walden (nothing here, but I have spent the
night here a couple times and stopped other times. I like it)
-Rock Springs, WY (nearly always cold and windy, no matter what time of the
year)
-Fort Bridger, WY
-Evanston, WY
-Ogden, UT
-Brigham City, UT
-Jackpot, NV

This flight I plan to meet relatives in Wendover, UT, so instead of going to
Jackpot, I'll fly to Wendover, Elko, NV, and the Rock House. If weather is
iffy, I'll fly from Elko to Winnemucca, NV, then north to McDermott and the
Rock House.

john h - waiting on weather (much better here than some old hanger at an
isolated airfield)

I like flying Michigan. Haven't been up there since John W and I flew it in
2003.

The Great Lakes are a great place to fly. Nothing like low leveling the
beaches from one end to the other.
