I have decided that I can no longer fly without heat shields on my carbs. Hot starts are very difficult and I'm afraid it is dangerous. The Amanda Franklin situation really scares me... though Rotax wasn't involved. My condolences to her family.

The Rotax diagram indicates that the factory drip pan/heat shields cannot be used if the air filters are connected directly to the carbs. Is this true? Anyone with experience?

Hi Ernest,.

It is true they won't fit depending on the type of filter, but the majority do fit in this category. They protrude too low. It is fairly easy to make a set though out of some thin gauge steel.

decided to post a conclusion to this post. I fabricated drip trays/heat shields for my carbs. I have no more hot-start problems.

I recommend that anyone who does not have heat shields on their 912 carbs get or fabricate some asap. Makes a huge difference.

Yeh, sure do need heat shields for those carbies right above the hot exhaust. I used sardine cans. They fit really well, are light, and the price is right. They are a friction fit over the bowl of the carb, and an elastic cord or tie wire secures them. See photo.

ejessee,

You might think about wrapping your exhaust pipes also. It lowers the under cowl temps notably and adds an additional safety factor too. After I wrapped my 912S exhaust I felt much safer, and it starts quite well in the California desert heat.

What did you use to wrap your exhaust? What are others out there using (those that have also wrapped theirs)? I see exhaust wrap kits at around $50-65 a kit on amazon.com

You use header wrap cloth. It can be purchased from most automotive stores. Buy the 2" wide. It may be black or a tan color. You want to only wrap from where the exhaust pipe leaves the head and down to the top of the muffler. Do not wrap the muffler. You can go under the exhaust springs. Secure the top at the head with a hose clamp and another hose clamp under the exhaust springs with another clamp. The cloth around the knuckle under the springs will also keep any exhaust gas blow-by down. You only want to over wrap each spiral 3/8". Do not over wrap by an inch or more as that waill retain too much heat. The cloth needs to be damp, not wet when you wrap it and pull it snug as you go. When done start the engine and it will burn in. let it run for about 15 min. It may even smell like it is burning and may smoke a little when you shut it down, but it is a one time deal. It will be fragile after it is burned in so don't use any tolls or scrape it real hard. The header wrap Mfg states it will reduce temps by
70 %. I don't know if it's that much, but you can touch your exhaust after a shut down and not be burned. It will save your hoses and wires too.
If you have any questions you can call me. I have done at least 50 planes with the wrap.
p.s
Everyone should really have carb drip trays installed. They do two things. help shield the carbs from heat (less important) and they keep dripping fuel from the carb off the hot exhaust. It is not uncommon for carb bowl gaskets to leak and they can leak quite a bit.
