It is getting hot here in the south and I was wondering if anyone has flown their Mark III with the doors off. Any handling issues I might see? Love the open air and visibility of my previous Firestar with no doors. Any Ideas.
Anyone have pictures of what they use to hold the doors up while on the ground? I need to do something fast. I am picturing small lift struts at the front of each door then close the door just before takeoff. Any pictures and details would be appreciated. I'm sure there are plenty of you who have something that works for you.
Thanks

I've flown many hours without the doors on my MkIIIC... can't tell a whit of difference with them on, or off (except it's a bit windier in the cockpit). Some people claim that if you have a panel behind you, you can't fly it with the door off.... but I have a lexan panel behind me, and it doesn't seem to matter.

To avoid paying high prices for pneumatic lift struts, I found a much cheaper and simpler alternative. Boats sometimes have hatches held open with springs which are stiff enough to stay in column unless you push on them in the middle, when they collapse. I bought one from West Marine for about $11, tried it and liked so bought another for the other door. This was on a Rans S6, not my Slingshot.
Here is a link to a fancier model than the ones I used but the principle is the same.

Here's a selection of lift struts at Surplus Center that might yield one to use on Kolb doors. None is more the $4.99.

That is worth bookmarking.
Here's another excellent source if you need bearings. Fast and reliable. Check the "take your time" box for
shipping. They will still arrive incredibly fast.

Rick,
Thanks for that link. I'd never seen any gas lift struts that cheap before. Have you bought any of their products? If so, how's the quality?

I've been doing business with Surplus Center for about 10 years, now. The product description will always tell you if the item is new or a take off (you'll find this primarily in electrical stuff) and I've never been "bitten" by anything I've bought from them. You do need to watch the "in stock" number in the description, too. If you want four and they only have three, it could mess up your project planning considerably. In 2003 I took on designing and building a machine that fed cedar shingles into an automatic painting machine and a stacker for when they came out. I bought all the drive components, hydraulic motors, sprockets, chains, and bearings from them and everything was just as described and, so far as I know, is still running just fine. If you get on their mailing list, you'll get a nice catalog ever so often that's kind of fun to look through. All in all, they're a great company, they sell top rate stuff, not seconds, that I know of anyway, and they ship promptly. Two thumbs up, as they say.
