I recently have had oil pressure readings on my 912S that are on the low
end of the safe zone. Thru this and the Rotax list, I was advised to
order a new sensor since they have a tendency to fail over time.
I ordered a new VDO sensor from Aircraft Spruce and installed the new
sensor when it arrived. I started the engine and wham the gauge pegs
out on the high end. I shut down after a minute or two as I thought
maybe the reading would drop back down. No such luck. I was thinking
to myself, how could I screw up a simple swap and replace.
Based on info from the Rotax list, I then proceeded to check the sensors
individually by using an OHM meter and hitting the sensor with air
pressure. Sure enough my old sensor was reading about half the value it
should. I then checked the new sensor and just like the gauge in the
airplane, it pegged the meter. Both tests were done at 80 psi.
The packaging by Aircraft Spruce for the sensor was one of the flat rate
boxes from the post office for $5 and their was minimal cushioning
(maybe a dozen starch pellets). It seems that since these sensor die
over time due to vibration, the packaging could be better for
shipping. Anyway I will call customer service tomorrow and see about
getting a replacement sensor.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Dan,
We had the same problem with our 912s. Both of them developed a low oil
pressure reading. If I remember correctly, the pressure was down in the
20's during flight. We hooked up an old oil pressure gauge with an oil line
running to the cockpit and found the pressure was actually correct. The
problem was in the sending unit.
It seems the Rotax 912 vibration shortens the life of the sending unit.
Many are now mounting the sending unit remotely so that the engine vibration
doesn't affect it. I think Kitfox has a kit to do this. Also Lockwood in
Sebring FL can probably help. It is just a rubber hydraulic line lets you
mount the sending unit away from the engine. Plus, the VDO gauge from ACS
is just as good as the one from Rotax and much less cost.
Good luck,

Dan,
I recently had the same problem with my sensor. Which one did you order, the 0-100 or 0-150 PSI sensor? What do you have for a gauge?

Dan, It sounds like they sent you the wrong unit. Check the #'s and markings on the sending unit.

I believe VDO stamps the pressure range (in bars) on one of the faces of the
hex nut just above the threads.

I did this to my 912 after the sending unit started showing bad readings after 6 hours of flight time.
No problems with oil pressure since completeing this mod. Got everything from Kitfox.

The outside temp went above 90 the other day, and after 8 touch and gos, dutch rolls, and steep turns
my oil temp hit 265 setting off an alarm. Normal ops is around 220 this spring and was about 200 in the
winter. I was looking at the oil cooler and the front of the cowl blocks about 1/2 the cooler. Might have
to lower this to get better airflow to the cooler. Using the bed style engine mount.

Got a new oil pressure sensor today from Aircraft Spruce and it works
fine. It did not include an extra post for ground and looked exactly
like the one that was in my engine when I bought it. The first sensor I
was sent had an extra ground post. I suspect they just sent the wrong
sensor even though it was rated for 0-150 psi.

"extra ground post"?
Did it look just like the signal post (labeled "G" for gauge) and was there
a "WK" stamped into the metal can next to it? Then it isn't a ground. It is
the "warning contact" for the idiot light and closes to ground when the
pressure is too low.
I've attached a photo of a typical VDO sender with the warning contact.

Craig you are right , it would be for an idiot light.

I changes over to the 2 post sender and added a red light in the middle of
the dash to alert me if I ever lost oil pressure. I still have the gauge
running on the other post.
It's nice to have the gauge but you have to keep constantly scanning it for
it to work. I think a red light going on in the middle of the dash would get
my attention much faster.
