Off to a flying start, but only have the shop on weekends, so I'll post pictures of the finished product soon, for those who are interested.

Backfilled the entrance ramp to nearly level, for easy entrance and exiting the Kolb in and out. Purchased a used electric motor and reduction drive unit today also .

Finally got the beast home....it looks grand, it has the engineering of a Sherman Tank and a heart of a Volkswagen Beetle. Even with a 60 to 1 reduction drive unit plus a 48 tooth sprocket and 20 tooth sprocket the 1/2 horse power single phase electric motor could not handle the 700# door. Only option a larger 3/4 or 1 or 2 horse power motor. ka-ching ! ka-ching! ....it's only money !

Next weekend wall removal and Bi/Fold installation. Stay Tuned !

Dennis,
You could try counter-balance weights to reduce power requirements. My bi-fold door is made of 2x4s and corrugated steel sheeting and I open and close it by hand.2 pulleys and cables and 2- 20gal drums of concrete make it move easily. The drums are back in the corners on either side of the tail.Cables attach at the lower corners and center of the door.Pretty straightforward installation. We have been battling high winds and high heat all week. Hope to get the bi/fold installed this weekend....note the trees bending over in the background.

Everything is ready for installation tomorrow .....Knock on Wood !
Reworked the reduction drive for a third time. ... With the right leverage you can move a mountain. ...

Roof braced for wall removal.

A couple parting shots before it actually turns into a bi/fold aircraft door.

That is a three stage reduction! You should be able to do your preflight inspection while the door is opening Smile.

*********The three and half minute bifold door ****************

It's been a momentous task, over budget, behind schedule, several redo's. But the end result was well worth all the extra effort. I no longer have to fold the wings on my Kolb Firestar II.

But the frosting on the cake was the real bonding experience with my son. Without his talent, skill and determination I would have never attempted such a daunting task !
Enjoy !

Congrats, Dennis; that's a fine looking piece of hardware.

Now, I might be even more interested in the building itself. The
previous shots of the exterior make it look like it might be a pre-fab'd
metal building, but the interior shot seems to show a beautiful wood
truss & decking structure. Was it a kit, or were the curved trusses
built up by someone on-site?

Thanks,

Charlie

PreFab rafters assembled on Site in 1961. Covered over in metal 5 years ago. Quonset roofs seemed to be the rage back then, but as the walls commonly pushed out and the roofs sagged from years of heavy spring rainfall, the quonset soon fell out of vogue in this region of the country.
