Hello all,
My Europa has developed some play in the outer aileron hinges as a number of people seem to have experienced. I am planning to replace the hinge wire with a teflon sleeve but have not been able to find a consensus about the right size from previous emails. Recommendations copied below are for sleeve of ID 0.066", wall 0.012", OD 0.090 (with pin 0.0625) or ID of 0.105, OD of 0.125, wall thickness of 0.010 with a pin of 0.094. That seems quite a big difference.

My hinge wire for the standard Europa supplied MS20001-5 hinges is 0.092 inches, so the second suggestion sounds closer, but I'm not sure whether the OD of 0.125 would go into the hinge. ACS specifies 0.089 inch pin for MS20001 hinges.

I would be very grateful if those who have successfully used teflon sleeve in the standard MS20001 hinges could tell me the dimensions of the sleeve and hinge wire used, and where they were sourced from.

From the Cozy list archive I understand that the parts can be procured
from McMasterCarr:
teflon sleeve: 5335K17, ID 0.066" (1.6764 mm), wall 0.012", OD 0.090"
(2.286 mm), $2.30 per 10 feet
pin: 7972A261, 1/16" (1.5875 mm), $17.60 forr 32 lengths of 3 feet McMasterCarr does not ship overseas anymore so a US builder might
intermediate.
The diameters are smaller than the ones you mention Graham, but more
likely to be correct?
Could it be that you have larger hinges than MS20001?
I measure hinge ID of MS20001 at about 1.8 or 1.9 mm, regular pin OD at
about 1.5 or 1.6 mm.
Inserting the teflon sleeve proposed above will be a stretch already. A question also arises concerning the pin proposed above - diameter
seems rather similar to that of the regular pin.

Bill Theeringer used to do kits too,
The teflon sleeving is 14 gauge electrical, has an OD of 0.125, a wall
thickness of 0.010, an ID of 0.105,
and uses a 0.094 302 SS welding rod pin. This results in a 0.011 slop
around the pin. I recomend cutting the teflon at each hinge juncture so
the teflon is captivated and rotates aroind the pin. Mine has over
1000 hours on it and shows no sign of wear. You can put a warp in the
pin to
eliminate the slight slop, but I think this will result in pressure
points that will facilitate wear. My personal opinion only.

Tim

Have a look at:- http://www.uslan.com/hinge-kit.html

This is what I´ve used in all my hinges from new but he says it works in an already worn hinge.
