As some have found stronger tail wheel springs with little slack in them make for a better gound handling airplane. The weak stock springs will also allow the tail wheel to rotate and unlock completely in a strong cross wind. So I installed compression springs and rigged them with little slack.
The problem then surfaced that even with full rudder deflection the the tail wheel would not unlock. The fix was to drill two holes closer to the pivot point in the tail wheel bell crank to get the tail wheel to unlock at full rudder defection.
Attached is my tail wheel and compression springs. Note the red line drawing to the right of the existing tail wheel bell crank. The drawing represents a some what longer than the original bellcrank but you get the idea. As with everything else on my plane the extra length, that came with the tail wheel, no longer served any purpose so I cut it off.
