Given the inacuracy of the VDO fuel gauges and senders in my 701, I'm starting
to seriously look into installing a fuel flow monitoring system.  Have any of
you had any luck with these?  I was talking to a 701 owner the other day who has
an EI system and finds it under reading most of the time.  I would have thought
IE was one of the better systems.  Aircraft spruce lists several options
starting at about $150 and going well over $1000.00.

Hi Doug,

I have a MGL fuel flow meter on my Stratomaster Extreme in my Beaver.
It has a calibration feature and was not difficult to set. It is
deadly accurate and I use it (and trust it) for fuel level. There are
also many other uses for fuel flow monitoring. For example, I can
tell whether or not the fuel has alcohol in it. My 582 uses about
16.1 litres per hour at 5600 rpm without alcohol and if it is present
it will usually be burning about 17.2 litres per hour. I used to
check for alcohol but now I don't bother. I have a lot of information
on my the MGL but the fuel flow reading is what I look at most often.
I wouldn't be without it.

I have the JPI 450 fuel flow meter.... I LOVE it.... In a 60 gal fuel burn in my plane it is usually within 1 quart of being accurate..... You can take all the other gauges off my panel... just leave the fuel flow one.

Doug,

I have a GRT EIS4000 with the fuel flow option. If this is what your friend has, he will have to calibrate it.
Over the first few flights I just measured my tanks with the calibrated wood sticks I made and looked at what
the fuel remaining on the fuel flow meter said. I adjusted the EIS with its calibration function until right on.
It gives you fuel flow, fuel remaining, and endurance.
