Congratulations, Sabrina.

I'm glad you are doing so well. I'm also glad to hear you decided to
balance your ailerons.

I'm within a day or two (maybe?) of my first engine start. I've had
last minute issues come up with flaps, brakes, and fuel system. My fuel
tank quick drains turned out instead to be slow leaks. The drain valves
came with an extra O-ring at the bottom which was not fuel compatible
and they rotted on both tanks.

I hope to see you at OSH. I'll be arriving there on Tuesday and leaving
Sunday.

Hey guys,

Great news, N5886Q took to the skies again today after installation of aileron mass balance weights. I spec'd 75 gram 1/4"x 3/4" steel weights. It took 20 weights total (along with a couple 1/16" and .040 shims), 11 on the pilot side, 9 on the co-pilot side. My test pilot reports heavier ailerons towards full deflection with a greater tendency to return to neutral. It handled 15 gusting to 25 at 320 on KARR rw36 very well.

I am now working at Boeing Phantom Works. Boeing has given me the entire week of Air Venture off! I arrive in Chicago on the 22nd and depart for LA on the 31st.

My first year at MIT went very well. I made it K-13 with perfect attendance and straight As. My overall average was 98% for the year. I was named one of the top seven freshman. I will return in September as a Physics major with plans to do a double major in Aero/Astro.

Hope to see you guys at Air Venture!

Your little buddy,

Sabrina

Congratulations Sabrina on installing the balanced ailerons and on your award! Your plane looks terrific and I too felt the extra weight of the ailerons but I feel more comfortable flying now than before. In fact, I just finished a flight from North Carolina to Glasgow, KY several weeks ago that worked out very well... that was after completing a second Phase I flyoff in North Carolina. The first was completed in Palm Beach County, FL. BTW, your weight distribution on the ailerons sounded almost identical to mine. Here is a photo of my recently completed 601XLB.

Hi Sabrina,

I missed the photos on the first read of your message, but I finally got
to look at them.

What are the white circular things on the bottom front of your engine
cowl? (Machine guns?)

Sabrina:

When you do a side by side comparison between REM37BY and any fine wire plug, the only way the fine wire can beat the BY is if you got them for free.  Sure the fine wire does a great job but is it really worth 3 and 4 times the price of the BY's?  No Way!
And if you really want to squeeze the nickle... The BY's even increase the compression in the cylinders by - - - Six Ladybugs per cylinder.  Well, you get the idea, yes there is an increase even as small as it is.

I have been running BY's on O-235, O-320 & O-360's And ya know what in the past 12 years I have not had to replace ANY REM37BY.

A couple builders wrote off list indicating that their mass balance came in several ounces less than mine overall.

First, I have four large (compared to Zenith specs) .040 aileron gussets with SS A5 rivets.

Second, I spec'd .032 aileron ribs (as opposed to .025)  for the four aileron ribs that hold the two mass balance arms. (Thank you Zenith for punching them out for me back in 2009.)

Third, I substituted A5 rivets for many of the original A4 rivets.

Finally, the weight of the paint on one aircraft's aileron vs. another aircraft varies.

No worries...   One of you noticed, in the EAA shot of my airplane, the lip I added to my cowl.  Yes, it has helped with cooling.  Even better news, my Cessna is running smoother these days with REM37BY plugs as opposed to the REM38S Iridiums I used to fly with.  I may use them in my experimental the next time I need plugs.   Any thoughts from those of you who use the BY plugs?
