Dear Listers,

I pulled out all of the fuel selector valve and fuel pump goodies from the old fuselage today. I disassembled all of the various flare ends and cleaned up all the Fuel Lube with lacquer thinner making sure not to get any in the pump or valve or transducers. All but two of the fuel lines seem to be reusable and don't show any signs of damage from the Mishap. I really don't want to have to recut, rebend, and reflare all of these if I don't have to.

What's the common knowledge on reusing the flares on the fuel and brake lines?

Am I just asking for a bunch of leaks if I put these back into service now that I've unscrewed them?

Thanks!

Matt

As long as the flares and the B nut are undamaged, they can be reused.

I don't have definitive answers to your questions...but this is important
enough to get some. Call John Schwaner of Sacramento Skyranch and ask him to
be sure. He won't commit to an answer (liability), but just ask for his
opinion...what he might do.

That said, here's a couple of thoughts. First, on flared connections, I
don't think fuel lube does a thing. Doesn't hurt but doesn't help the seal.
Second, I'm *guessing* Al is malleable so it can be reused...up to a point.
If the flared end is tightened and relaxed in a lot of cycles you will
fatigue it.

But call John or another real experienced expert for the right answer.

Matt,

As long as they're in good shape you'll be fine. This being the first
time off I wouldn't worry too much about them being worn out. Look at
the recent thread about brake lines, but something tells me you've
already got hoses to the calipers.

Matt,
Generally, you can re-use the fitting. If in doubt, you can add conical, copper sealing washers between the flare and the AN fittings to improve the seal. See

http://www.ap100.com/

or go to Aircraft Spruce's site and do a search for : 04-05006 DEL FITTING SEAL 3/8" OD
