Here is an article by Carol Carpenter of Rainbow Aviation
This is a huge shortfall area for too many owners and mechanics. Be proactive and make sure you keep good records and demand the same from your mechanic.

I had the same conversation with my boss.. HE asked me to keep good records. I responded with: "How can I keep good records when I am recording crap?"
