My name is Steve Kurash, I have built from plans a 701, and have replaced

For a builder of the aircraft, this is definitely a doable project, but is
not an easy one; remembering that this fitting actually holds the wing onto
the airframe, it is also a very important part! As builders of experimental
aircraft, we have/have the ability to apply for, a repairman's certificate
that allows us to repair or maintain the airframe and engine, while buyers
of used or professionally assembled experimental aircraft are not allowed
that privilege.
It has been my observation that the member's of this list are always eager
to assist a builder with anything at all they are struggling with, and this
is what the list is all about. But, we as a group need to be mindful of the
FAA regulations that require a repairman's certificate in order for any
owner of an experimental aircraft to perform repairs and maintenance.
Earnest, please seek the services of an A&P to accomplish your repairs. It's
the law, and it is designed to protect you.

Steve,
What are you advocating? That we check to be sure no one on the list
might break the law with anything they might learn on the list? We don't
know whether or not Earnest may be working with an A&P, or might be an
A&P and not familiar with Zenith designs. This is the internet. How
would we go about verifying anything? Many on this list are outside the
U.S. and are not subjected to the F.A.A.'s regulation.
I would rather help someone repair an airplane correctly than have them
repair it incorrectly.
Let the information flow freely and let Earnest make whatever decision
he choses about the legal aspects of his situation.

Actually Steve, you as an owner of an Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft
can perform maintenance and even major modifications. It's just that only
an A&P Mechanic or holder of the Repairman's Certificate can do the annual
conditional inspection.

Steve you are wrong unless the rules have changed recently. Anyone from a six year old to the bag lady on the corner can repair or maintain an experimental amatuer built aircraft without a repairmans certificate. That is just how the eaa said it when I called to confirm after being threated by local FAA who called two days later to apologize this was back in 99 when I bought my pietenpol which was complete and flying. The only thing you cannot do is perform the annual condition inspection.

All,
I have done extensive research to ensure that I am legal in making repairs on my plane. As has been said, it is absolutely, 100% legal for anyone to make any repair to an experimental aircraft. Yearly, it must be have a "conditional inspection" by a certified "A&P" (not necessarily an "IA"). This bit of information is often misunderstood but is the reason that the experimental segment is the only segment of aviation that many of us can afford to enter -- and, as I understand, is the only segment of aviation that is growing.
I am very thorough when I work on my plane and always have a friend back-check my work when possible.
