Hi All,
Here is a reminder about our Rotax 912 gearbox inspection time table. There are many getting close or already there so make sure you get this done when it is due. It is a requirement. The only one who can do a gearbox is a "Heavy Maint" rated mechanic. You do not want your backyard mechanic to mess this up. You also need a special tool to compress the gear set down and a hydraulic press.
If you have an engine that has the 2000 hr TBO and use 91 oct. unleaded fuel then you are due at 1000 hrs.
If you have the 2000 hr TBO and use 100LL more than 30% of the time you are due at 600 hrs.
If you have a 1500 hr. TBO and use 91 oct. unleaded fuel you are due at 800 hrs.
If you have a 1500 hr. TBO and use 100LL more than 30% of the time you are due at 600 hrs.
I'm sure the rates to do this will differ because of labor cost at each facility. To clean the clutch of the lead if you have used 100LL then it will be approximately $100 + shipping from the distributor. You do not necessarily need new bearings, but if you choose to add that as an option it is about $160 in parts and another $100 in labor.
All you really need is new Bellville washers ($60) and shimming. If you need only the inspection then you are looking at roughly 2.5 hrs labor plus the $60 for the washers. This should be all most of us need. You can have the shop at your location do it right there or send the gearbox out. Shipping the gearbox is quite easy. If you have any questions you can call me or Jeremy at CPS. Jeremy can do these inspections at CPS and I'm also Rotax Heavy Maint rated here in Tucson.
If you are an owner that blends their fuel with a 50/50 mix of 100LL and 91 oct. then your due at the earlier times.
If you use 100LL then you will also have to send the slipper clutch in to one of the distributors (CPS, Lockwood or Leading Edge) to have the clutch dismantled and cleaned of the lead paste that will render the clutch either inoperable or greatly inhibited.
There is nothing really good to be said for 100LL and if your aircraft can use 91 oct. unleaded regardless of the ethanol or not, then you are way ahead of the maint game and it saves you a lot of money, even from day one starting with low time oil changes.

How much if we just stop by and let Roger do it on the way to Cactus?

Well, Roger would charge $50 hr. from start to finish. So about 2.5 hrs, plus the washer parts (at) $60. If you fly in I have to pull the prop and box so it is a tad more verses sending it to me. Works for me either way.

Roger: I have a 912 UL without a slipper clutch and use auto gas (mostly 93 oct). What is the gearbox inspection schedule for my engine?

For the 912ULS:
use of 100LL 30% of the time or more, every 600 hrs
use of unleaded fuel at 1000 hrs.
912UL at 600 hrs either fuel. (I'm not sure why the difference of only 600 hrs. either fuel verses the 912ULS with 1000 Hrs.)
I'll dig a little further on this one.

Roger:
I thought the message that you sent on July 12 said that the gearbox inspection was 800 hours for a 912 with a 1500 hour TBO that used auto fuel? Was that message only for the 912 ULS? Thanks.

Hi Graham,
This is the part I'm double checking. I had a distributor tell me that, but that's not how it reads. Let me double check and get the, for sure answer.

I questioned the 800 hr gearbox inspection on a 1500 hr engine old time table and after some questioning and researching the paperwork here it is.
With the newest Line maint. manual and the SB on TBO's gearbox times were changed. So here it is. If you have a 912UL
(80 hp) and no slipper clutch, which is most of them, then the gearbox inspection is 600 hrs. on either fuel.
If you have a 912 ULS (100 HP) with a slipper clutch, which is most of them, then it is 600 hrs when you use 100LL more than 30% of the time and 1000 hrs if you have used unleaded auto fuel more than 70% of the time.
The older times you used to see of 400 hrs and 800 hrs are gone.

I wonder what the rational is for this 600 hr. number? At 600 hours on my 912 UL I did have my gearbox examined by an approved Rotax shop. They listened to the engine, pulled and examined the magnetic plug and used a borescope to check the gears and the shimming of the gearbox and said that it seemed just fine.

Once upon a time there was a 400 hr. check too. The rational behind the 912UL 600 hr. is that it doesn't have a slipper clutch and they have found issues sometimes.
