Hi All,
I have a Europa with a Rotax 914. I had the engine in at LEAF last year to have them work on an oil leak due to crank case fretting. While the engine was there I had them overhaul the carbs.
Ever since that time I have had a fuel smell which is a common issue with Europa's. For quite a long time I assumed that it was new fuel hoses that I installed and I was slowly going through the process of eliminating each source with no success. Finally I resorted to putting in UV fuel dye and I discovered that the starboard carb was covered with dye.
Pulling the carbs of a 914 is a bit of a pain and before I do so I'd like some suggestions of what would cause a fuel leak at full power.
Thanks in advance, Paul

Paul,

Check the bowl to make sure it's tight. Make sure the gasket is seated properly without breaks or kinks. The pressure in the carb bowl appears to be forcing fuel out.
Rich Shultz is having issues with his carb bowls coming loose and leaking fuel and pressure. In his case, the leak is sufficient to lower the pressure in the bowl, causing fuel to cut out at high boost. The problem was discovered when the mechanic noticed fuel coming out from where the bowl contacts the carb.

paul,

We had LEAF rebuild our carbs with no problems. At the class we took at LEAF they commented that you have to seal all the plugs in the castings after putting the carbs in a caustic cleaner. If you look at your carbs, do you see clear epoxy around all the plugs? It's easy to see around the plug on the very top of the carb. Perhaps they didn't seal one of yours.

Word of mouth indicates that some of the composite factory LSA planes with
integral wing tanks are experiencing sag in the wing/tank surfaces over
extended time frames, presumably related to constant fuel exposure.

Interesting point about the EPOXY.
What EPOXY are they using?
NOW - Paul... Are you running MoGas?
I do not know of any EPOXY that will stand up to MoGas.
Never tested AvGas with EPOXY. I would guess there are some that would
work
since there are composite built planes.

Barry,
Europa used Redux for the wing skins and bonding in the fuel strainers among other things. I have found it to be highly resistant to fuel, however it is a very expensive epoxy.
To answer you question I run mogas and always have.
