Lynn,

I just noticed that you've done a ton of mods -- very cool! I think there should be a new model "Lynn's Jabiru Extreme Edition" for your setup <g>!

One of the things I noticed was that you have the Rotec TBI for your engine. I just ordered mine the other day. If you don't mind, any tips for a newb?

Also, what was the main reason for going over to the Alectroair Ignition System?

Looking back, if you had to do all the mods over again for the Jabiru Engine (intake manifold, ignition, carb, etc.), would you? Are there any that you consider vital?

Thanks,
Don

Don-
I didn't start out wanting to make mods to the engine, but the rocker
arm bushings wore out, so I replaced them with something that I
thought was a better bearing for the purpose. When the crank gear
broke, that opened the door for the ignition modification. I hadn't
liked the pseudo-magneto that Jabiru came up with, and when I had oil
leaks from both distributor shafts early on, and rotors that got
wobbly (my fault for not gluing them on....what? how many engines
require you to glue a rotor in place?), that set the stage for
changing to a modern ignition system....capable of advancing the
timing when necessary.

I bought the Rotec TBI because I had been reading a lot about flying
"lean of peak EGT", and I wanted to give that theory a try. Because
you can't do this with a Bing....that is, change the mixture on the
fly...when I heard about the TBI that Rotec was building, I bought
one. If you are using it on a 2200, plan on restricting the throttle
travel, as the size of the throat...40 mm, if that's the one you
bought...is to much for the 2200 engine. For a 3300, I understand
that the size is just right. I restricted mine about 1/4", then later
I thought that sleeving the throat down to 35 or 36 mm made more
sense. (I see that Rotec is now making a 34 mm TBI for VW engines.)
Also, once you begin to fly it, you will probably notice that the
mixture control can be adjusted to provide a lesser-than-full
travel...also necessary for the smaller engine.

I think that the latest intake manifold that I built improves the
power of the engine, and gets the EGT's a bit closer....but still not
perfect as I had hoped. But like they say, if the CHT's are close and
low, (and mine are always less than 20 F apart, and often down to
single digits) then the EGT spread is not that big a deal.

As long as your engine is running well, and you follow the hourly
checks that Jab provides, and have *good luck*, none of those mods
that I did was vital. I just saw room for improvement and I love to
tinker, so I did what I felt had to be done.
