Hi
Total France are now rolling out the Rotax 912 specific AVGAS UL91
Read the article in the LAA magazine and after making some enquiries obtained this useful link:
http://www.total.fr/carburants/les-carburants-aviation/avgas-91-ul.html
The link indicates the aerodromes that are selling it to date. Total France say 2 or 3 more airfields are to be converted each month, often replacing the existing AVGAS 100LL offering. From a Europa Rotax selfish point of view it is good to see Europe is quickly moving in this direction. Clearly for most Mogas still the preferred choice at home. But, having looked at the lead deposits on my plugs recently, following fifty hours touring using both Avgas 100LL and Mogas, happy to see a more Rotax sympathetic option arrive for trips a long way from home.

Hi,
Interesting to see Mogas 91 offered. We have Mogas 91 or 95 or 98, all unleaded. Which is the best to use for the Rotax 912s? I have been using the higher octane however the 91 is considerably cheaper if it is suitable.

Hi Tim,
It is important to understand that AVGAS and MOGAS use two different scales for their octane number.
RON = Research Octane Number is used in Europe and some other countries for MOGAS.
MON= Motor Octane Number is used worldwide for AVGAS.
Here in France, unleaded Mogas 95 is 95 RON and 85 MON.
Unleaded Mogas 98 is 98 RON and 87 MON.
From what you wrote, I assume this is the same in your country. Therefore, your Mogas 91 is probably 91 RON and about 81 MON.
On the other hand, AVGAS 100LL is 100 MON, and the new AVGAS UL91 we available in France is 91 MON.
ROTAX says the 912 needs 90 RON minimum, and the 912S and 914 need 95 RON minimum. So those flying behind a 80 HP 912 can almost use anything, but for the 912S and 914 do not use any Mogas below 95.
The new UL91 AVGAS is a very good news as it offers additional margin against detonation, no additives which can damage hoses, gaskets, etc and a better quality control. Unfortunately the price is about 20% higher than the best Mogas.
