Dear Fellow Builders, I have a question. On the Drawings (C1 I think) Van shows the top on the front gear leg fairing reaching into the cowl all the way up to the engine mount, some 3-4 inches my guess. Looks like if I cut it off at the bottom of the cowl and fair it in with an intersection which I planned to use any how it would be a lot simpler. Both to build and to remove for service. Is it vital that the fairing passes through the bottom of the cowl? Went flying again today, got 16.6 hours total on the Blue Bird. A sweeter flying plane I have never flown, Hope to hear your opinion of the fairing and thanks, Bill of Georgia N288WP

The short answer is yes, build it per the plans.
The longer length helps keep the fairing from sliding up the gear leg.
Pay close attention to the hose clamp that locks in the bottom of the fairing at the wheel assembly. Add micro to the inside of the fairing as needed such that the inside is a very close fit to the gear leg diameter. There is a lot of movement on the gear leg. The close fit will help keep the fairing from working out of the hose clamp.

Folks, I suppose a secondary question is 'does the leg fairing have to slide through the bottom cowl slot, where the plate is screwed on, when you take the bottom cowl off and on?"

Yes. The gear leg fairing stays on the plane when you take the cowl off, so have your bottom cowl slot wide enough so it doesn't interfere with the fairing.
Recommend you go to the trouble of adding an upper intersection fairing to the bottom of the cowl. While this is one more thing to remove to get the cowl off, it helps prevent ram air coming in the bottom of the cowl curbing climb high AOA (which would reduce engine cooling).

I don't have my plans in front of me, but I followed the plans. The upper nose strut fairing wraps around the strut fairing and "holds" it in place.
The problem with your idea to add the intersection fairing to the strut fairing is that when installing and removing the cowling, if the intersection fairing were part of the strut fairing then the strut fairing would have to be removed each time the cowling is removed. That is because the intersection fairing is normally disconnected and dropped down low on the strut while removing the cowling.
I recommend following the plans in this case.
