Yes please Mike.

my Xtra will be due for reweighing as part of the Permit to Fly inspection next year and it would be helpful to be able to crunch some figures first.

re W and B.

Thanks Mike

When I have time I will put in the figures from my last professional weighing onto the spread sheet and see how they work out.

Do you usually use the actual weight of the pilot? Here there is a standard allowance for W and B purposes and I think that is placarded as a warning for you to do something about it if you are outside the parameters.

Thanks

Pat

Hi Pat,

Regarding using 'actual' numbers, or that theoretical "170 lb" pilot and passenger, I did
several calculations.  Since it is so easy to swap out all kinds of weights and parameters, and
the program does that number crunching for you, I did several weight samples.

I found that a lone pilot, weighing that mythical 170 lbs, put the CG just slightly aft of center, of the
'25% to 35%' range...somewhere close to 31.1% aft of wing leading edge.  Next, I added a
170 lb passenger, which then put the CG at 27.5%...evidently still in the acceptable limits of CG.

Next, I put in my own weight (let's just say it's more than 170 lbs, not less).  Still within limits,
even if I add a passenger.  The "worst" calculation I got, which was me and a passenger, was
something like 25.5% to 26%.

I get the impression the MkIII is reasonably tolerant of pilot and passenger weights, as far as
staying within the CG boundaries goes.  Max gross is another matter.  At least the CG calculations
make it seem so.

I guess the MkIII Xtra has an even broader CG range does the MkIII C.  While discussing CG
stuff with a list member who has recently started flying his finished Xtra, he says his Xtra manual
says CG can be within 20% to 35% aft of wing leading edge, if I recall correctly.  I don't have an
Xtra builder's manual, only the MkIII manual.  I guess the Xtra has an even broader CG range than
it's predecessor.

I'm sure someone with lots of MkIII time, (especially with a passenger) will share their thoughts....
