Hi Jim,
The sound could be loose pipes impacting on close holding brackets, etc. Otherwise you might check your valve adjustments in the engine.

Larry,
Thanks for the response. I am embarrassed to say it turned out to be neither exhaust nor valves. The cowl was knocked very slightly askew by the rough grass field ( not by my landing, of course). When I removed the cowl to look for problem, the noise went away. And there is not evidence of any other problem. So I am flying again.
