Hello all,
I am about to install smaller wheels on my 601-HD (I'll install 5.00X5 wheels).. I would like to know if the wheel forks made of two layers of 3/16" 6061-T6 are strong enough...
Please comment before I buy the material to make new forks.
Thanks!

Michael,
My airplane is a Zodiac 601XL. As such it has a 500X5 wheel and the double 3/16" aluminum nose gear fork. When my airplane was jambed into a pasture berm at around 40mph, it bent the nose gear strut such that the nose gear was flat under the fuselage, also bending the firewall and forward cabin floor. The gear fork might have been bent a little, but it was intact. I'd say it was strong enough.

Michel,
I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing. Thought it might be a way to lighten things up a bit especially since I fly paved runways 100% of the time. Have you had a chance to do any weight calcs? I’m doing my annual right now and the tires need to be replaced. The ones called originally never seem to last more than a year – the outsides start weather cracking from UV exposure and while they’d probably last 2 years, I don’t want to get stranded somewhere…
Thanks,
Don

I estimated my landing gear will lose 11 to 13 lbs. Now I use 15X600X6 tires. I had issues with Shin tires before, but my MCCreary Air Trac are very good. I wonder if 2X 3/16" would be enough for the main wheels fork. If so, even more weight to lose (I have 2X1/4" forks).
