We are concerned that some pilots, following a ground-strike with an M14P, simply change the propeller and continue to go on flying.
 <?xml:namespace pr efix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The re are several areas where the M14P can suffer in a ground-strike:

The satellite gears in the gearbox are small and can crack with the shock-load.

The crankshaft is pinned together and a shock can move the separate parts of th e crankshaft in relation to each other.

The supercharger assembly is turning at over eight times engine speed and even at idle has significant inertia.

Lik e all western engines, the manufacturers of the M14P issue STRICT instructions th at ANY ground-strike must result in an engine removal; strip-down and check.</ P>

We had a Sukhoi customer who had a significant ground-strike, but at idle; changed t he prop, and about 10-hours flying later one of the satellite gears broke up, and the engine locked solidFortunately he was taxii ng in after an aerobatic sequence.   Had it happened a minute earlier t he engine would almost certainly have been torn out.

The re is a degree of discretion which an owner can use, but obviously at his own risk.

Our personal view is that any ground-strike should have at LEAST the gearbox removed; stripped and crack-tested.  I f the ground-strike has been mild; and the engine not stopped on impact, AND ther e is no gearbox damage, the engine is probably fine.

If however, the engine stopped on impact; there is any damage to the gearbox, then an e ngine strip-down must be considered essential.
