Roger Lee, have enjoyed reading you blog comments on the Rotax Blog. Asking my question here where I regularly monitor comments.
On a recent flight on downwind experienced a loss of power at the 4000 rpm range. Immediately added power and the engine responded quickly as expected. My first impression was possiblity of carb ice though have never had that problem in the past.
Then on startup subsequently the engine runs a little rough in that midrange. Planning to check carg sync tomorrow, Saturday, but not expecting a great revelation because of the sudden nature of the occurance.
Might possibly be related to the sticky valves that prompted a post earlier in the month?

Hi John,
It could be a piece of debris that got into a carb? It may show up on a balance. Sync them at 3500 and then run it up to 4000 and take a look. It doesn't sound like a fuel delivery issue from the system and it isn't electrical in nature. Something more central to the carb area. Let me know what the sync turns up.

Vacuum checked showed about 11/2 to 2 inches difference at all rpms. Either the engine was way out of adjustment or something else was wrong. After fussing for a few minutes a crack, long, was found in one of the carb mounting flanges. Fortunately I had another on hand so the swap was fairly quick. It took longer to then synchronize the carbs following reassembly. It's tough to keep track if in or out moves the mercury up or down. Also reset the idle as you suggest at 112 turns out. Runs smoothly now
Thank you for your help.

Hi John,
Glad it seems to have worked out. Air leaks can give your system grief and trying to find some of them can be a pain too. You were lucky to find the carb socket leak as they can be hard to find at times. This is one reason they are included on the Rotax 5 year rubber replacement program. Let me know if all is well after several flights.
Have fun.
