Andrew....Why are you cruising (at) 2375 RPM? How about 2500 or 2600 RPM. (75% power).

Borrow a hand held digital optical tach. I suspect your factory tach is tired.

What do you mean "Max out at 2600 RPM"?
Is that all you can get from the engine in S&L?
What altitude?
Do you have the HC STC with the limit on RPM at 2650?

HI Barry,

Sounds like my tach is done. I'll have to try an optical handheld like someone suggested earlier. I just had the top done and am still in the break in period.

My FBO is at 1066
My AME told me not to exceed 2600

I was the one who suggested you get an optical tach to calibrate your factory one.

Your tach displays rpms, and records hours based on revolutions of the crankshaft. These are two separate things. One does not affect the other.

Since you have the HC stc, you technically have a redline rpm of 2650 now. This issue has been hashed out many times, but in the end it comes down to this:  There is no FAA requirement that your tach be accurate. But it is a good idea for you to know how fast the prop is turning. The engine itself can handle exceeding redline, especially as long as there is a load on the prop, (not in a dive), but the prop gets stressed disproportionately as rpm produces high tip speeds.

Bottom line, you need to know your true rpm, but you do not have to have that number displayed in the cockpit.

Your AME or A&P is incorrect. If you have new cylinders, you should run at maximum load, minimum of 75% power, for the first 30-40 hours.
For what it's worth, I break in an engine at 2500 feet to 4500 feet in a racetrack pattern. I run flat out. If it's 2800 rpm, then so be it. Look on my website under technical. It give a break-in procedure.

HI Barry,

Sounds like my tach is done. I'll have to try an optical handheld like someone suggested earlier. I just had the top done and am still in the break in period.

My FBO is at 1066
My AME told me not to exceed 2600

76*3.14=238.76 inches
238.76/12=19.897 feet
Speed of sound at 20°C = (approx) 1120 feet per second
or 67200 feet per minute
67200/19.9 = (approx) 3377 rpm.
Transonic begins about 0.8 Mach
so, a conservative estimate would be 2700 rpm.
realistically, you can look at the pressure increase limit as .92 Mach or 3100 RPM.
I've seen 3050 RPM on my Tiger.
Cheetah:
74*3.14=232.5 inches
238.76/12=19.37 feet
Speed of sound at 20°C = (approx) 1120 feet per second
or 67200 feet per minute
67200/19.37 = 3469 rpm
at .92 Mach you get 3192 RPM.
I've seen 3250 rpm on a Cheetah

----------------------------------
Of course . . . this is only meaningful for certain conditions. The speed of sound in air is dependent on OAT and the density of the air. So, depending on how high you fly or the OAT, the speed of sound will change.

===============
On another note . . . . .  Rare Bear turns a 12 foot diameter prop at 3200 rpm.
12*3.14=37.7
67200/37.7 = 1782.5 RPM.
His tip speed is WAY over Mach 1. The last half of the blade is going supersonic.
===============
The first plane to go 400 mph was the Chance-Vought Corsair.
R-2800. 2700 rpm redline.
13 foot 4 inch propeller.
13.3333*3.14 = 41.88
67200/41.88 = 1604 rpm.

What do you mean "Max out at 2600 RPM"?
Is that all you can get from the engine in S&L?
What altitude?
Do you have the HC STC with the limit on RPM at 2650?

Andrew....Why are you cruising (at) 2375 RPM? How about 2500 or 2600 RPM. (75% power).
