To set the record straight:

<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>The idea of the “window” was not to be able to inspect the gearbox in use, but was developed by Sergio Dallan in Italy as part of his oil shut-off system.
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>So there was a valve on the oil supply preventing oil coming down to the engine, controlled through a small door in the cowling, with a safety back-up in the form of a “barbers pole” and a light in the cockpit.
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>Then, in order to stop any oil that might be in the crank shaft draining down to the cylinders, there was a white mark in the gearbox, visible through the “window” and when the mark lined up, then the crank shaft was in its highest position, and so oil would not drain down into it and then into the cylinders.
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>Sergio made a few, and indeed we fitted them to several Sukhois.   Generally worked well.
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>As I recollect it was simply a thick Perspex disc, with a metal reinforcement around the rim, using the same three bolt holes as the existing metal cover.
<![if !supportLists]>Ø <![endif]>In passing the existence of the cover is an easy way to identify a Series 2 engine.
