Hi all,I am traveling with my Euopa 914 and I am having problems. I had a leak from the fuel bowl so I removed it last week to inspect it. I checked the bowl surface a glass sheet for distortion and it seemed okay so I re installed it with a small amount of Loctite 515. I test flew it and all seemed good. I flew 3 hours to Lincoln, Nebraska with no issues. I did use full boost to take off out of Lincoln and I could smell fuel again. I found that at 10,500' I had to back the MP down to 24" to stop the smell so I am guessing that the bowl leaks at anything above ambient pressure.I intend to remove the bowl on Monday to inspect and the question I have to the group is how tight am I supposed to do the nut on the bottom of the fuel bowl. My concern is that I might distort it if I do it too tight. My other question is, it it acceptable practice to use a fuel resistant gasket cement?Thank, Paul

Hi Paul,

Have you installed a new gasket? If not I would do that first. I see lots of leaky carb bowl gaskets and usually a new one takes care of the issue.

Hi Paul,
As Roger said, try a new gasket.Cork gaskets from Bing are supposedly
better than the paper ones from Rotax. And it is indeed possible to
over-torque the bolt on the bottom of the bowl. Over- torque can
distort the bowl causing the brass posts that the floats slide up and
down on to splay outward. Not good.
I can't remember what the proper torque is, but I remember I needed to
use a crow-foot on the torque wrench.

The torque for the bowl screw is 48 in/lbs. It's in the parts manual.

I have been told that the carb is the same as one some BMW motorbikes and it occurred to me that I might be able to purchase a gasket set locally in Colordo Springs or Denver. Would any one happen to know the year/model/serial number of the BMW bike? Thanks, Paul

The gasket is likely the same as the one used on BMW R75, R80, R90, and R100 from 1973 to 1995.

Paul, Why don't you go to the Bing Agency at http://www.bingcarburetor.com/. They're in Kansas so shipping should be cheap.

If it is a Bing 94 carb, regardless of which BMW it is on, the float bowl gasket should fit.

Hi Paul
"Would any one happen to know the year/model/serial number of the BMW bike?"
I think it's the same as my 1988 R100GS BMW. You can probably purchase from Bing and even buy one of their kool carb parts tins and official manual at the samr time though. I used to buy BMW stuff from:

A brief note of caution - If Bing's gaskets are cork, they may not be
ethanol resistant.

I was told by the Bing Power Systems folks that the cork gaskets are
made for the spring type holder on the 912 carbs. The carbs with the
screw on holder use the other type gasket since they can be tightened
more. I'd be interested in knowing your source so I can do a bit of
research.

Also, NEVER use any form of RTV on a cork gasket. It dissolves the rubber.

I have taken about 40 hrs of Rotax maint. classes with the folks at
Rotech in Vernon, B.C. They told us that they prefer to use the cork
carburator bowl gaskets over the paper ones for the 9-series Bings.
They also told us to be careful and torque the 914 bowl bolt to specs
and showed us the result of over torque, which can deform the bottom
of the bowl causing the brass rods that the floats ride up and down on
to splay outward and cause the floats to stick.

I have had my float bowls off a couple times and have not replaced the
paper gaskets yet.

No mention of incompatability with 10% ethanol.

RTV will NOT dissolve the rubber... GAS AvGas or MoGas will loosen the RTV.  Even RTV that is supposedly rated for Gas.

Barry- your comment is interesting, as I know of a couple of instances where it did dissolve the binder in the gasket material. One was the oil pan gasket on a Cadillac. The engine had just been rebuilt, and the gasket fell apart within a week or so.  I had trouble with the valve cover gaskets on a Dodge flathead- same thing. I have been told to only use something like Indian head cement on them- if anything. I was told that it's the evaporative solvent in the RTV that does it. Maybe it's the type of RTV- blue, black, or red?

Bill:

The cars you mention are from my era, back then the cork was NOT bonded and it was not a compound.  Today's cork is a compound.  And YES those OLD REAL CORK gaskets were very easy to destroy.  That is one of the reasons why they went to metal 'head gaskets'.  Back then you coated the gaskets with INDIAN GASKET MAKER aka Varnish.
Now as for the colors:
Clear
Black
Gray
White
These are standard Sealant & Adhesive types.
RED
Is considered a High Temp
BLUE
Can be a High Temp but is also know as a GASKET MAKER.
And just to confuse matters GRAY is also a High Temp in some brands.
NOTHING is STRAIGHT FORWARD any more.
DOW Corning advertises a RTV as a GAS TANK SEALANT... They should be brought to court for FALSE ADVERTISING.  The RTV may not dissolve but it sure does NOT bond to anything in a gas environment.

RTV will NOT dissolve the rubber... GAS AvGas or MoGas will loosen the RTV.  Even RTV that is supposedly rated for Gas.

A brief note of caution - If Bing's gaskets are cork, they may not be
ethanol resistant.

Barry- That explains a lot. Yes, both the cars and the stories were from many years ago. Thanks.
