Gidday,I have set up a rear battery location for my battery on the assumption that I will have a CoG problem. I have a 914 with an Airmaster prop, and a normal panel. Suffice to say, can I presume that I might need weight in the tail and therefore having the battery back there is a good option, or can I confidently place it under the baggage bay shelf ? I am about to buy cabling for the battery which is why I am asking at this point.
If I do keep the aft location I am trying to work out a lightweight containment that will accept a decent deceleration. The back of my head looks better without a battery in the back of it. I have thought of using rudder cable looped aft under the tailwheel leg attachment point, and then forward onto the battery box. This Odyssey battery at least comes in a metal battery case. Any input much appreciated.
Thanks

Tony,

That far aft (picture) shouldn't be necessary. Under the baggage bay or just to the rear of the baggage bay (and accessible through the "D" door) should work out just fine.

Best regards,

Tony, My mono/914/Woodcomp wobbly prop/fully equipped panel set up has the
Odyssey battery sitting over the pax footwell in front of the firewall,
where it sits in a small moulded tray secured by a nylon strap. It left the
C o G in reasonable position, but to achieve what I calculated as the ideal
position, I fitted 3lb lead block in front of the stern post. ( Giving
position 58.96" which allows any combination of pax 150 - 400lbs/baggage
0-80lbs/fuel0-110lbs) I suspect that the saving in extra heavy duty cable.
and support for a rear mounting more or less makes up for the 3 lbs weight
and it is certainly more convenient in the engine department.
So I wouldn't assume that you have a C o G problem, and would be
strongly tempted to plan a forward location until proved otherwise.
Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ

I used copper clad aluminium wire and built an aluminium support for the
rear mounted batteries but the overall weight was certainly less than 3 lbs.

C of G turned out to be perfect. I have a 2-bladed CS prop, 914,
intercooler, second alternator, and a loaded instrument panel.

Hi All,

My mono came in at 860 pounds and with the battery in the rear I needed 4 lb of lead in the tail.  I have since mved it further back to the post that holds the counter balance.  I also used CCA cable which was less than 2 pounds.
