greetings to those on this listserv ... my name is dave ferrell. i just joined the group as i am considering the purchase of a lightning ls1. i sold my grumman tiger a couple weeks back after 154 years of ownership and am searching for a replacement. i have 34 years of flying experience and close to 1,000 hours but 90% of my current flying is local, airwork, t&g's with a few cross countries of around 500 miles each year. i had one short demo flight in a ls1 in florida built by max voronin ... beautiful plane with a great panel. max and his wife are the dealers for this part of florida. i will be fllying it again later this week.what advice / comments would you current lighting owners have for a prospective buyer: what you like and don't like, issues to watch for, handling comments, any quirks with the model, what kind of performance specs are you seeing, commetns on the powerplant, buying used vs having the guys in tn build one to suit, etc.
all comments would be appreciated ... my e mail for direct response is: david.r.ferrell(at)gmail.com (david.r.ferrell(at)gmail.com), phone is 919-757-8599
thanks in advance for the assist

Hey David: Welcome to the Lightning group. When I started reading your email, I thought it was from a gentleman (I'm terrible about remembering names) I met last week in Shelbyville. He had sold his Tiger and built a Lightning, he seemed very happy with it, and was taking transition training. I was there starting the build on my Lightning. I have about 300 hours in a Lightning and feel it is the best Light Sport airplane you can buy (or build). Not only is it the strongest, but also the best looking. (My neighbors comments are "it looks like it is going 100 mph sitting still")
Like all airplanes it has good and bad points, but I feel the good far outweigh the bad. You can only carry two people, and 50 pounds of baggage. (but then it sounds like it is just right for you) It has plenty of power, coming from its Jabiru 3300 (that might be considered a detractor because it is made in Australia), and I strongly recommend attending an Engine Seminar in Shelbyville even if you decide not to buy a Lightning.
It is sensitive in pitch (a little more so than your Grumman) and I think one must be careful not to over rotate on take off. I like the response much, much better than that of a Cessna. It also has terrific visibility and you need to ensure some protection from the sun. Once you learn how to get in and out of the airplane it is very comfortable even on flights over 5 hours. It does not have a lot of stall warning, but it has a very large flight envelope. Some say that it breaks very quickly in a stall.
I personally feel the best deal is to build one in Shelbyville and get it just the way you want it. If you want to talk about the airplane, feel free to call me (863 635 7916)

David,
I'll try to answer some of your Lightning questions, but let me start off by saying I absolutely love the Lightning, both the experimental "go fast" version and the SLSA LS-1, so obviously I'm biased. Since you are looking at an LS-1, I'll keep my comments centered around that model. Actually they are basically the same aircraft with the exception of some "speed enhancement mods" like different wheel pants, gear leg fairings, and prop. So the strength of the airframe is the same as well as the outstanding flying characteristics. I have lots of time in many Lightnings and also have flown many other experimental and light sport aircraft. Overall, none compare with the looks, handling, comfort, economical operation, and bang for the buck of the Lightning. You will find some faster, but their higher fuel burn will reflect the extra speed. So, overall the Lightning is at the top of my list. It is a great airplane for just flying around the local area and also good on cross countries. Everywhere you stop, people will want to look at the Lightning.
As far as light sport performance, I'm convinced no other light sport aircraft can match the Lightning in actually making the 120 knot cruise speed. And the Lightning's Jabiru "real aircraft engine" can still pull the 2850 rpm "max continuous operation" all the way up to the 10,000' altitude limit for light sport pilots, so you can imagine what the true airspeed cruise on cross countries will be at the higher altitudes - great! The takeoff, climb, and landing performance is also exceptional. Like I said, I love the Lightning. Great airplane brought to you by great people and outstanding dealers.
Enjoy your demo flight.
Blue Skies,
Buz Rich
