This question is for all you Rotax 912uls drivers out there. This past year I have been having issues with what I had hoped was a faulty ammeter. But after replacing the ammeter with a volt meter as per the recommendation of my local A&P mechanic. I have discovered that the gage was not the problem. I do indeed have a problem in the charging system. With the volt meter, after engine start, it was showing 14volts or more but by the time I got airborne it was only showing 12 or less and after less that a 30 minute flight I had to land because I was down to less that 11 volts. The system just was not charging. This engine only has a little over 100 hours total time on it so I’m wondering if I could have a bad rectifier. In addition to this problem I am getting a noise in the radio ever time I transmit. Could the two be related or is this a separate problem? Opinions please.

About a year ago I experienced identical charging behavior with my 912uls, also a low time engine. I corrected it completely by replacing the rectifier/regulator. Got it from SkyStar.

Hi Roger,
You will find that a lot of 912 regulators go bad. I am on my 3rd one. I do have an alternator now and it is running parallel to the one that comes with the engine. Mine would act just like yours, I believe it is a heat problem. I can now taxi with nav lights, landing light, strobes, transponder, 2 radios, inst lights and system charges with engine at idle

Howdy Roger
Don't know how your electrical system is set up. Two things to check. First, your voltmeter is probably measuring the available system current (current from regulator + battery - load) and not output from your regulator so you need to go through the process of assuring the regulator voltage is adequate. Second, is it possible you have over loaded the system and are drawing from the battery? Add up you amp draw & see if you're within limits of the generator output. Next time you fly and experience the voltage reduction begin turning equipment off and see if the voltage goes back up. If you haven't already, trade out your incandescent bulbs for LED.
