Hi All ,

I have recently found out that my intension to omit the sight guage completely
would require a second means of visual inspection to satisfy the UK LAA rules,
Namely if I don't fit the sight guage I need to dip the tank - not feasible really
without fitting a conduit to the tank.

Has any one in the UK managed to omit the sight guage completely ?
I just do not want to fit it,
Regards,
Steve.

I believe a mod exists to fit a sender with a screw top fitting to allow dipping of the tank. Still not a good option if you over fill the tank!
My solution the same problem is to fit a sight gauge (tube) Fitted beside and low down the filler neck. The plastic sight tube being as short as possible the rest being aliminum tube. This should make replacing the tube easy the rest is fit and forget. When you come to fill up with fuel you will know how much you have and how much to put in. A problem with Europa's not to be underestimated. It will not be of much use if you are very low on fuel but as I have a fuel flow indicator and virtual tank this can be calculated with ease with a margin of extra fuel for safety.
Good luck
Martin.

That sounds interesting - do you have a Mod for your sight gauge that you can share with us? - obtaining prototype Mod details from LAA is always a bit hit and miss....

Guys,
If you are wanting a tank fill dipstick, why not create a convoluted guide from a small diameter tube for a flexible dipstick to go down (as found on many oil dipstick set ups), the guide tube would need permanently installed inside the tank filling cobra and into the tank, a suitably sized flexible dipstick could be calibrated/marked as a one off exercise.

Locating the guide tube would be interesting , but some sort of spider top and bottom of the cobra could be one solution (Glassed into place ), should only add a few ounces and keep the end of the tube off the tank bottom so it does not chaff through.

Regards

Kevin

Hi Richard

To comply with the LAA regulations i did fit a sight tube,      but I kept it to the minimum length i could get away with,
It comes up between the strb seat and tunnel and runs up the seat backrest then routed over the top of the tank to the
Cobra filler pipe,
I calibrated it on the ground and it gives a accurate reading and is helpful to watch the clear pipe filling up
towards the cobra when my tank is nearly full, But is not much use in the air
I also know exactly how much fuel is in the aircraft before putting any more in which is helpful, have included a couple of pics to give you the idea of what was done,

regards
Ivor

Thanks for the replies,

I've had some external feedback on this and it seems it's a grey area,
I'll see how I get on,
Steve.
