I have a Garmin 296 and a SL30 Nav/Com.
I have read that the 296 can set the com freqs automatically on the
SL30. If so can someone give me the direction for hooking this up and
making it work?
I also heard that it can be hooked up to the Garmin audio panel and give
verbal terrain avoidance warning. How does that get hooked up?
Anybody have links to these directions or any more info about these
features?

There is a serial output (two actually) that you need
to hook up. You need a special garmin cable that
plugs into the power port on the back and has loose
wires coming out. That is for the connection to the
SL30. The audio warning is done by a 1/8" stereo jack
that is on the back lower corner of the unit. You can
wire that to an unswitched audio on your audio panel,
or if your audio panel has a 1/8" input jack, you can
just get a 1/8" to 1/8" cable and plug that in.
I found the terrain feature kind of annoying because
it tells you to "pull up" even if you are landing at
your destination airport! She get's quite frustrated
and says "pull up, pull up!" in an ever increasing
urgency in her voice!

Here is the communication I just had with Garmin on this subject....
-----------
Thank you for contacting Garmin International
I do not know if the autopilot will be able to pick that information out or
not. The information will be there but it will also be there with the VHF
output. You will need to talk to the autopilot manufacturer on that. The SL
30 will see the VHF out and be able to switch that information.
-----------
Kevin
Looking at the menu in the 296, the NMEA and VHF out can be both set at the
same time on either port. Will the autopilot and the SL-30 not be able to
differentiate between the communications which are meant for them. The
reason I'm asking, is that the interface wiring to my panel will be simpler
if I can use just the one port.
Thanks
Ted
-----------
Thank you for contacting Garmin International
You will need to use the second com port to use both functions. You will
need to set one com port to VHF com out and then the other to NMEA out. This
should allow you to run both the autopilot and the SL30 together.
If I use the 296 to run an autopilot, can I use the same serial output for
both A/P and freq setting on the SL-30, or do I need to use the second
serial output for one of them...?
Ted
-----------
Thank you for contacting Garmin International
You will use the power data cable out of the back of the 296. You will then
change the output in the interface section to 'Aviation In/NMEA & VHF Out'
and tie the cable into the input option of the SL30. Once this is done then
you can change channels by selecting the frequencies from the waypoint page.
-----------
Problem:
It is my understanding that the GPSMAP296 is now able to set the frequency
in the SL30 comm. Can you tell me which output is used for this feature. I
am building aan RV-10 and need the info to wire the panel...
Thanks
Ted

Paul,
I think you are describing the 396. Mr. Hester's question was regarding the
296 which does not have features.

It's the same unit, except for the XM radio and
weather. The cable is still required.

Yes, but the 296 does not have the 1/8" stereo out put. At least mine
doesn't.

Oh...my fault. I thought it did. Make sense, since
the 296 doesn't have XM, there isn't a need for the
1/8" output.

The audio for the 296 for audio beeps and boops and warnings, if it has them
should also live in the data cord that you would use to get "Aviation"
position data or VHF freq data. Check on the tag that comes with the cable.
