My electro-magnetic compass has over 1000 hrs and it just keeps working. I have seen RV builders tear their hair out trying to get the Dynon to work right.

The display on the front unit was getting a hazy look so I installed Pappy's old unit when he "upgraded", glad I did.

Anecdotal evidence is always fun -- and meaningless -- to bandy about. The facts are simple: solid-state MEMS gyros and accelerometers, as well as microprocessors, are several orders of magnitude more reliable than the electromechanical systems and vacuum tubes they replace. Now that is not to say that you didn't get 1000 hours of service from your electromechanical gyro compass but only that, on average, you will get more from its solid-state replacement.

That's fine, and as long as the unit is working (and as long as you aren't expecting it to be mission-critical) you should keep using it as there is zero incremental cost to do so. But once it fails, it is time to put something more reliable (and lighter and uses less power) in its place.
