I had two new (UMA) CHT gauges and matched sending unit probes installed
when I had a new panel installed. One sending unit was mounted in the
return line between the belly mount radiator and water pump, left or
pilots side of firewall in my case, using a professionally made
inexpensive pipe fitted with a sending unit recepticle that is available
from Lockwood Aviation, Sebring Fl.
I had heard that the temps seen from the cylinder head mounted sending
unit should be higher than the coolant temp in the return line, BUT that
is NOT what I have seen. As I recall I switched the wires between sending
units and switched the sending units but got the same higher readings in
the coolant than from the cylinder head.
So I pretty much ignore the "CHT" temp which is routinely noticeably lower
than the coolant temp reading. On climb in hot weather the coolant temp
reaches the yellow range as spelled out in my Rotax manual, with the
recommended higher BAR radiator cap using 60 percent distilled water and
40 percent Dex Cool because water has greater heat transfer than
antifreezes.
The engine has never boiled over or lost coolant.

Guys,
Getting ready for my maiden voyage and am having a problem with charging.
My
amp meter shows a negative draw and the volt meter shows 12 volts, as I
turn
things on the amp draw goes more negative. All indications are that the
system is not charging, I am running a Kuntzleman Hotbox. Pretty sure all
is
wired correct. Any suggestions where to start? Can I check the AC output
of
the charging coils? Any chance that the voltage regulator would be the
culprit?
Also on a side note, is anyone monitoring their cooling water temp other
than as CHT? If so where do you have the probe and what are you seeing for
water temp?
Thanks,
Lloyd C
