For all of You who are flying, Is there a need for a windshield
defroster? If so what are you doing.

Thanks, Brad

It depends on a lot of circumstances.
How tight is your cabin sealed. How cold and damp is it where you intend to fly? How many people giving off hot damp breath? The circumstances go on and on. I used to fly a tight cockpit airplane mainly in WI, MN, and Mi. There is no way you could fly safely there without a defroster! If the windows all fog or freeze up and you don't have IFR training and the proper instruments to fly by you are in trouble. I now fly in the Arizona desert so there is no need for a defroster in my Zenith701.

I had my 701 up yesterday in -5 deg C (28 deg F) temps. While I was initially starting the engine I had a little fogging of the windshield but once the prop was turning it cleared up and there were no further issues. I found the same thing last winter.

I do have cabin heat that blows semi warmed air through the firewall towards the passenger side about mid height but due to a tight fitting heat muff I don't get much air through it. I have no air flow or heat specifically pointing at the windshield. I was up in -15 deg C (0-10 deg F) weather last winter and like yesterday, I didn't notice any significnat fogging issues once the engine was running.
