Here's something I've been wanting to try for a long time:
I just ordered some Epoxy Premium Pigment from AS&S.
Prep the plywood on the wing, use 1080 deck cloth with straight resin, while still tacky - squeegee resin with micro-balloons and Epoxy Pigment, then I'm going to use this stuff in the last two layers of West System 105 Resin / 206 Hardener, and if I can get to flow & look flat and glossy, I'm NOT going to paint the wing.
So...waddya think ???

Chuck,
Sounds like a lot to do before it sets up on you. You made need helpers and cold weather...

Gordon,
The reason for the micro balloons is to fill the weave, after the cloth is applied with straight epoxy. The final 2 coats will not have micro balloons in it.

Dan,
The only thing different in the process, is that the epoxy will have some white pigment in it. Cloth will be applied without any pigment.

Chuck,
If you don't get any poo poos about the modus operandi from the ones who have done it... take pictures! The rest of us will be grateful.

I have played with pigment in the epoxy and it is not opaque enough. At a certain point you start to lose some strength with the large quantity of pigment trying to get it opaque.
Try a small sample first on some test pieces and see what happens.

Also remember that the epoxy needs to be protected from the UV and I don't believe the pigment will be enough. If you call Gougeon, and ask for a Tech Rep they will give you their opinion. They have been very supportive in not laughing at some of my ideas.

Chuck, you are wasting your time. It will not work and you will have to
paint regardless. Apparently, You are reading too much into the hype of
marketing and sales from AS&S. Do yourself a favor and forget the idea and
just use good epoxy and glass to finish the surface of your wing. Then,
apply a good primer for the paint you intend to use. Over the years, you
will be glad you took the time to do it right.

Paul,
I found my copy of the West System User Manual, and it says the same thing you did...the pigment will NOT be enough to protect the epoxy from UV rays.
So much for the No Paint idea...
Thank you all for your responses.
