Hi,
During the recent annual inspection, the ignition cable slid out of
one of the spark plug connectors on the Rotax 912 UL engine.
It turned out that the connector had
never been correctly screwed onto the cable. Instead, the cable
had simply been pushed into the connector. The problem surfaced
after 16 years and 1400+ hours.
It may be that all but one of the thousands of engines Rotax has
produced, have correctly installed connectors.
Nevertheless, if you have one of the Rotax 912
or 914 engines, you may want to check this during the next oil change.
For this, the tie wrap of each connector needs to be cut.
Then you hold the cable firmly and try to screw on the connector
tighter. If the installation was correctly done, you will not be
able to twist the connector and feel immediately a hard stop.
Then another tie wrap is used to secure the connector.
When I did this, on two connectors I could tighten the
connector just a bit more. For the rest, the installation was correct.
By the way, a cheap source of the NGK connectors, part
number VD05FMH, is
sparkplugs.com
Happy flying,
Klaus
