This is a post to share the recent experiences with the Garmin 795 and to give guidance to any Europa flyers who may be considering the purchase of the device and using it in conjunction with Sky Demon planning software.
My 795 was one of the first in the UK, it was used from Oct to Dec without too many issues. I had a temporary problem after copying .GPX files from my route planning software to the internal folder of the Garmin.
Having both Sky Demon and PocketFMS gave me the opportunity to determine the optimal software to transfer routes to the 795. The following is a summary of things people should know:
1. Sky Demon (up to current release) generates .GPX routes that can make the Garmin 795 permanently lockup.
2. The lockups occur even of the route is transferred to the 795 via the Mapsource software Garmin can supply.
3. PocketFMS .FPL routes work OK on the 795, however, the ICAO database waypoints do not get interpretated properly by the 795. It is necessary to manually replace all ICAO waypoints with the ones in the Garmin if the data for that waypoint is to be used fully (freqs, runway info, etc).
4. 795 firmware used is 2.30, Garmin state that the Sky Demon route issues will be fixed in a later firmware update.
5. The breadcrumb logs of the 795 require careful management, it is easy for flights to get missed off the logs.
6. Sky Demon are working to produce a version of the routes that works fully with the 795.
These issues have been replicated by a small number of users, Garmin are replacing the units affected.
The conclusion is that the 795 has been released with a great set of features but there are some issues that need to be fixed before it becomes a unit l could wholehartedly recommend.
