Hi All ,
I'm new to the list. I had some parts for a 701 ,so I ordered the rest of the parts that
make up the firewall aft, and the finishing kits, from zenith they are supposed to be ready
to pick up Feb. 2.
I'm not a newcomer to aviation but the only zenith I've been around is when I got a ride
in the factory demo a couple of months ago. I fly a Kolb firestar 2 with a HKS 700 engine.
Wich brings me to my question. I know its a bit early , but when I think about what engine
to use, I can't help but wonder if anyone has put a HKS on a 701? If any of you know of someone that has , please help me get in touch with them. How it turned out could save me a ton of money, time and effort.
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. The Kolb list is of great help to anyone who
flys a Kolb. I'm sure the people on the Zenith list represent a large pool of knowledge and experience. I would welcome the chance to visit ----Email , Phone , or if close enough, in person with owners or builders. Happy Flying!!

There was an off-shore variant known as the Bingo 4T (Google will find several references for you) that had an HKS and more than one Avid Flyer has had an installation as well, so it would seem worthy of conversation at least… My observation, however, is that the move from the UL version to the SP version seems to have moved the power discussion from the 60hp range to the 80-100hp range and I see that at least one turbine powered CH701 exists – hotrodding is alive and well…

You would probably be disappointed with a 60HP engine on the current 701.

The 912ULS is by far and away the best option for the modern 701.

I agree with John--- you'll be disappointed with anything less than 80 hp.
Mine was "OK" with a 65hp "582" (2 stroke)--- but wouldn't do it again.

Hi Fritz,
Thanks for you thoughts. Was yours the 950 or the 1100 lb version?
Happy & safe flying.

I've gotta agree with John as well. I have the 80hp Rotax in my 701 and wish I had the 100. The 80hp gets in the air nicely with moderate loads and cool temps but when the desity altitude and load start to climb, the extra oomph of the 100hp sure would be nice. Additionally, if I were to go on floats, I would be limited to solo flight with the 80 hp.

It wasn't the 1100. About 950, don't remember exact number.

I scratch built. 1995-1996 It was one of the first with the new main
landing strut. And one of the last that the 582 was available from Zenair
( I bought the engine from them)

I believe the SP version was the generation after mine--- which is all the
more reason to go with the bigger engine.

My plane would "jump off the ground" but lacked climb performance.

I am not a Rotax fan--- but the 701 owners flying with the 4 stroke Rotax's
swear by them.

My opinion only.
