Ever thought of mounting a battery box in the back? I've got the mount.
The one on the left is powder coated in silver. The one on the right is powder coated white.

27+ years ago when I installed the 0-320 in my AA-1B, I thought about moving the battery to the back (as was an option in the STC). I looked at one that had the rear mounted battery (in I think was a Piper battery box), and thought what a pain in the ass to service. I chose to go with the 9 lbs of lead in the tail, figuring this would not be much more then the weight of the new box and the long cable. I still think that was the right desison today. I have the original starter and alternator that I still could upgrade and remove a bit of the ballast.

Yea, I looked at John Coze's plane. What a pain-in-the-ass. On my plane, the wrap around plastic and the plastic side panels have been replaced with my own design. To open the back, I just lift out the entire back bottom/lower cover. No screws needed. Hat shelf stays in place.
Leaning over to get at it is still a pain.
Carrying unnecessary weight was never an option.

I just replaced the battery in my C-182P, the Gill G-35S I installed last Febuary. I put a standard G-35 back in (under warrenty). Even though I am working through a large bagage door, my back hurt for a couple of days. Getting old sucks....
