I am far from an expert on the M14P engine like some others on here, but this is hard learned information that may make someones' day easier.
This info pertains to the Murphy Moose but can be a general overview for any M14P engine.

We tried starting an M14P engine (on a Murphy Moose) over the last week a few times with not much success.
A few fires here and there, some smoke out the exhaust, and maybe 20-30 revolutions at any one time, but nothing consistent. Below is what we found.

As discussed previously, it is very important to make sure the primer solenoid is installed in the correct direction. #2 is in, and #1 is out. This sounds backwards but is the way it is designed. It is easy to check that it is working correctly by unhooking the primer line from the junction on the intake manifold and seeing if fuel squirts out of the tube. It should squirt at least 3-5 feet if your fuel pump is delivering the required 5-7 Lbs of boost when you activate the primer solenoid.

Make sure that when you look at other peoples fuel system installation pictures, they have not reversed the image. This can make it look as if the fuel system is correct when it is actually backwards. A lesson learned the hard way.

The original Shower of Sparks coil that is used on the Russian engines, while quite reliable, has a few weaknesses. It does not like to get hot. It can crack or weep over time sending black tar like goo out the crack.
If you see any black goo on the outside of your coil, it's done! (George was a huge help figuring this one out)

It is also imperative that the end of the lead from the shower of sparks that goes to the left mag be so well isolated from the case or any other part of the coil that the spark does not jump from the lead end to the case of the coil.

The coil we had was labeled incorrectly for the positive and negative terminals. While this should not matter to its operation, it could cause some problems internally that I am not aware of.

The Shower of sparks can still appear to operate properly when looking at a plug, but it will never let the engine fire correctly to start if it has cracked.

If you follow the starting procedure and the engine does not start after 2 full revolutions of the prop, something is wrong! All you are doing if you continue cranking is wasting your air.
